Provocations Linger (and linger) Chapter Nine- (revisited and revised)

    “Alice,” they guessed in unison.

Sam looked from one to the other.

“Alice, as in your radio friend?” she asked Tina.

She was a feeling a little like a third wheel and not sure why.

Tina felt Sam’s discomfort and realized that waiting for some privacy to explain her and Bette’s past might not be possible. She didn’t want Sam to feel excluded.

“I met Bette and Alice the same night, Sam. I went to Bette’s gallery for an opening. She and Alice were already friends… Bette and I started dating not too long after the opening.” She tried to say it as matter of fact as possible.

“Bette’s gallery,” Sam repeated. She looked at Bette as the light bulb went on over her head. “I see,” she blushed, uncertain what to say.

Bette smiled uncomfortably and then occupied herself with her cell phone, stepping a few feet away.

Tina pursed her lips. Brushing her hand along Sam’s arm she made eye contact with her.

“It was the craziest thing Sam. We hadn’t talked in years and there she was taking the same flight to New York. Wild, huh?” Tina wanted to make it clear to her girl friend that she hadn’t meant to surprise her like this with her ex-wife.

“I was talking to you when I saw her…” Tina rambled.

Sam realized Tina was worried about her response and tried to alleviate her concern.

“That is indeed wild,” she agreed. “And then you flew across country together,” she hunched up her shoulders, shaking her head in amazement. “That would be… wild.”

Bette rejoined them. “A couple Scotches help.”

“Or a nice Chardonnay,” Tina added.

    Sam laughed.

A horn tapping caught their attention.

“Thank God, there’s Tessa. Saved by the bell, eh?” the DP told Tina.

Bette and Sam quickly got the bags and Tina’s suitcase organized behind the back seat. Meanwhile Tessa had taken one look at Bette and jumped in back insisting Tina ride up front with Sam.

“Bette, you should take the front, it can get pretty windy in the back and you have that lunch meeting. Tina offered.

Sam frowned. “You wish Tina.” Turning to Bette she added, “It can get windy if we’re moving fast- but I doubt that will be a real concern, the traffic should slow us enough to keep your hair in place.”

    6. Hey ZP, Great additions to this interesting and intriguing adventure. It was fun to have Bette and Sam meet. There was an element of sizing each other up which Tessa witnessed.I thought it was brilliant to have Tina admit to her fling with Helena before Bette has even met the woman.Tina’s support of Bette through her father’s death just prove yet again that there is much unfinished business between these gals. It is inspiring that a tragedy can bring them together as only they can really understand the sense of loss the other feels. This is a true connection between hearts, minds and souls. One that will last forever.Sam is doing a good job of not being overly bothered by Bette’s re-introduction to Tina’s life.Only time will tell how this all plays out.Bette and Tina just belong in each other’s arms. I hope they find this out too and soon. Many thanks for this fabulous fan fiction.Your Loyal Fan.
