Pink Elephant
“Shane, I have to pee. Pull over at the next gas station,” Carmen said as she took off her head phones and ran her fingers through her hair.
“Can’t it wait? We’re like.. 20 minutes from the cabin,” Shane said without looking at her girlfriend and missing the look Carmen gave her.
“No, I really have to go.”
“Why didn’t you go before we left?” Shane asked a little bit annoyed.
“I did, we left five hours ago. And now I have to pee again. So pull over,” Carmen leaned over her seat into the back and stuffed her iPod into her duffle bag. Shane sighed seeing the a sign for the small town, if you could call it that, up ahead. She dropped her speed as they entered the little road side town and pulled into the residential gas station. The whole place felt like a bad horror movie. The building were old and run down and the only people on the streets were older than the crypt keeper and twice as wrinkled, giving the illusion of living zombies.
Carmen unbuckled her seat belt and in a flash was out of the jeep and into the tiny building. Shane felt a bit of nostalgia being back here. One of her foster families used to come up here on the weekends and every time they would stop off at the gas station and get Tiger Tiger ice cream. Nothing had changed in the fifteen years since she had been there. The gas station’s tank was still above ground in a huge white rusting pill-shaped reservoir and even the man running the till behind the dirty glass looked like the same man Shane remembered from years before. It almost made Shane feel a little bit sick.
She was taking Carmen to a place Shane had never taken anyone to or even shared the memory with. It gave Shane butterflies in the pit of her stomach. She was going to do what she never thought she could do. She was going to let Carmen in and she was going to Share herself with her. It was something Shane wanted to do for a long time but never had the nerve to. Every time she wanted to ask Carmen if she’d like to go for a trip she’d chicken out thinking maybe it wasn’t a good idea. That maybe she just wasn’t ready but when Carmen took Shane to her father’s grave, Shane realised that doing this was going to be good for them. It was going to show Carmen that she was just as much in on their relationship as Carmen was.
