“What is your girlfriend’s name and address?” Agent Johnson put a notepad in front of Bette.

“Ex-girlfriend,” Bette corrected but she didn’t move to pick up a pen that Agent Johnson gave her. “Out of respect for her family I’d rather keep that private. I cannot disclose that information without their permission. They have nothing to do with…whatever that is. Anything else?”

Agent Johnson opened his mouth to say something but the female agent stopped him as she put her hand on his shoulder and asked calmly, “Would you be able to provide an itinerary or tickets, anything, to account for your trip?”

“I am sure I still have a copy somewhere,” Bette replied. She paused for a moment. “May I ask a question?”

Agent McKinnon nodded.

“What’s this all about? I came here willingly because Tina told me you needed to talk to me. I was under the impression that you think I’m some sort of a drug trafficker. What’s my Geneva trip has to do with drugs?”

“We’ve got an anonymous tip and it’s our job to investigate,” Agent McKinnon shrugged.

“Well, your anonymous source is wrong. Do you have more questions or are we done here?”

“Yes, we have more questions,” Agent Johnson chimed in again. “You have a house, a mansion rather, in Orange County that was in the vicinity of the joint ATF and FBI investigation earlier this year.”

“What about it?” Bette’s heart began pounding fast and she hoped the FBI agents wouldn’t see how nervous she felt.

“How often do you stay there?”

“It depends. Mostly on weekends when we need to get away from the city.”

Agent Johnson opened the folder he set on the table earlier and took out several pieces of paper stapled together. “Here I have a report from the ATF and DEA joint investigation. Last year they were investigating a major cocaine and oxycodone distribution ring in the Laguna Beach area and other locations around Orange County. They had arrested a member of a scientific research team, who was involved in smuggling some of their equipment and a drugs trafficking on a side. According to his testimony, his usual spot to meet with a courier was the sequoia grove right behind the Porter mansion.”
