    Numb: Chapter 6

Did you ever wonder what would go through your mind before you died?  Bette always thought that she would see Tina and Angelica, a slideshow of her loving wife and daughter would play through her head and she would die smiling because they would be her last thought.  Tina’s blonde hair would be shining and her loving face would look at Bette in encouragement and full of love.  Angelica would make that half grin at her, curling just enough of her lip up.  Maybe she would see Kit and Melvin, remembering the good times…few as they are from her childhood, especially if you put the three in a room together.  There would be snippets of the girls, Shane’s knowing smile, Alice‘s whimsical laugh, and Dana’s…well Dana’s clumsiness.

At the very least, Bette Porter felt that she would see her life’s work and love.  Beautiful paintings and portraits by Klimt or maybe Picasso, or even work by the various artists she gave a leg up through the CAC.  She thought her own growth as an artist would flash before her eyes and she would leave the earth satisfied.

Never in her wildest dreams did she think that her final thoughts would be on how her blood would more than likely stain the three hundred dollar outfit she was wearing.  The whole idea flustered her…more than that it enraged her.  A man is standing before and in her humble opinion smirking like a madman with a gun pressed achingly into her forehead.  She would most definitely not be able to have an open casket after this, and really didn’t think that the morgue could possibly pick up all her brain matter and bury it with her.

Bette did feel that having her brain intact in heaven was a high priority in her life.  How was she supposed to debate with other artist and geniuses of the Renaissance, Melvin, and God himself if a piece of her brain was splattered on Alice‘s door?  Even Van Gogh would be looked at funny with only one ear, of course she would focus on his art, but her eyes would wonder a little to often to his missing ear and remind her why it was gone in the first place.  You would be hard pressed to try and keep a straight face while talking to a man who cut off his own ear.  No that would not due for her, she had no intentions of going to the great beyond in a dirty three hundred dollar outfit and half a brain…this maniac would just have to wait.  Today was not the day the Bette Porter was going die.  She was too unprepared and anyone else’s plan would just have to wait.

    1. I dont know if I’ve commented on your story or not, because a lot of the time I’ll read a story real quick with intention of comming back later to comment. Then I forget. I know totally rude. I know as a writer I love the comments. But in case I haven’t told you both your stories are GREAT. And I look daily for updates on both. Thanks for such wonderful story telling and two wonderful stories. The angle in which you discribe Bette’s death was very different and unique, just one example of why your stories stand out. Thanks again and cant wait for the next chapter on both. Deb
