    Never Can Say Goodbye

“Bette…are you there?”  Tina said sleepily.

Bette was slightly startled by the sudden interruption to her thoughts but quickly composed herself to whisper her reply.  “I’m here”

Tina’s sigh was one of relief  “Sorry I think I fell asleep”

“Yeah me too”  Bette admitted.  “I woke up 5 minutes ago and I’ve just been lying here picturing you drooling”

This revelation had Tina completely awake and indignant “What…I don’t drool”

    Bette chuckled “Tina….you drool”

“Shit Bette why didn’t you tell me that before”

“I didn’t want to embarrass you”

“And what now you don’t mind embarrassing me”

“Yeah I feel really liberated” Bette regretted the sarcastic tone immediately and changed tack quickly “I could tell you a few more things that you would find embarrassing….did you know that….”

    “La..la..la..la..la….la”  Tina sang

“And there’s another you are a terrible singer”

“What is this pick on Tina hour”

“Well we had pick on Bette hour earlier……if I recall correctly you said I was arrogant….opinionated…..”

“That’s not fair you asked and I said a little arrogant….. sometimes….and it was one of the many things I loved about you”

“Loved…”  Bette highlighted Tina’s use of the past tense

“Bette you know I didn’t mean it like that…….I still love you”

    “Just not enough”

Tina resisted the urge to say “right back at you” that particular can of worms had already been explored to death and had gotten them nowhere, unable to summon an alternative response she remained silent.

“So what are your plans for today”  Bette said as much eager to fill the silence as she was to change the subject.

    “I don’t know….I would offer to help but….”

    “Yeah….I know”

    “Maybe one day…we can be…..”

“Friends….Tina….really…..I’m already looking forward to that particular phone call….. Hi Bette it’s Tina……me and hubby no 4 would like to go away for the weekend you know to try save the disaster that is our marriage and we wondered if you could have the kids……of course I resist the urge to say I told you so and happily respond No problem Tina I’ll just grab my Mary Poppins bag and be right over…….”

“Are we done”  Tina would have added with the sarcasm if Bette hadn’t interrupted her again.

“Isn’t that exactly what we are”

Tina’s sigh confirmed that she knew that Bette’s interjection was completely rhetorical, and just like she had countless times since yesterday afternoon she remained silent safe in the knowledge that when Bette’s rising anger dissipated she would be the one to fill the void.

“Bette”  Tina said hesitantly when the norm failed to materialize.

    “What”  Bette’s anger still evident.

Reluctantly Tina acknowledged that their journey of countless circles had come to an end inevitably at the very place it had started.  She waited a few minutes.

“I think you should get some sleep”  Tina whispered not attempting to mask her complete despondence.

Tina’s suggestion was taken with acceptance of the true meaning behind it, Bette removed the phone from her ear and she stared at the key marked End.  Her thumb rubbed the warm plastic millimetres away from the button that to her mind would not only disconnect the call.  She assumed her sleeping position on her side and placed the phone gently on the pillow a mere inch from her face.  Closing her eyes she wondered what would come first…sleep or the finality of a dial tone.  Bette silently wished for sleep.

Hearing only the melodic breathing sounds Tina assumed that Bette had fallen asleep, she curled up in the foetal position and balanced the phone on the side of her head.  The connection that she shared with Bette however small would remain open.  As she closed her eyes, she knew they couldn’t be together but at least tonight they wouldn’t be sleeping apart.
