Mother’s Day Brunch (Time of Day 39)

    “Max drove.”

    “Max?” Bette queried.

    “Sure.”

“I can drop you by your house,” Tina whispered.

“No need.” Bette gave Tina’s leg another pat. “They’re going where I need to go, anyway. And babe, I’ve got to get into some real clothes.”

“Well, okay.” They hadn’t really had much time to speak after Angelica had woken up. And they hadn’t really taken much time for conversation prior to that, being occupied with other matters.

    “I will call you. Soon.”

“Today soon?” Tina hated sounding too hopeful, like she was a schoolgirl pursuing a crush.

    “Today soon,” Bette confirmed.

Following a little more conversation, Tina grabbed Angelica and the necessary bag. They made their way, with the rest, as a group to the front of the restaurant where another round of Mother’s Day wishes and goodbyes were exchanged.

As Tina began to walk away, Angelica held her arms out for Bette and let out a loud wail.

“Shh, sweetie. Shhh. You’ll see Momma B later.”

One more step earned stares from patrons all around. Tina blushed from this new cause.

“What’s wrong, Boo?” Bette asked the girl.

Her Momma B’s proximity calmed the girl. Bette and Tina walked out together.

Tina leaned in, giving Bette a kiss goodbye, this time on the lips. “You’ll call.”

    “I’ll call.”

    “No more shutting me out.”

    “T.”

Figuring that was as good as she’d get at this time and place, Tina let the matter drop.

“Okay, then.” She started waving to Bette, encouraging her daughter to do likewise. “Say goodbye to Momma B.”

Angelica got into the waving, but as Bette started to walk away, following Max, Shane, and Jenny, the tears started anew.

Tina let out a deep breath.

“Maybe I should ride with you.” Bette approached Tina again. “If it’s going to make her this upset.”

    “No, go with Max.”

    “T?”

“We can’t give in to her just because she cries, Bette.”

    “It’s just a ride, Tina.”

“And what happens when we get to your house? We’ll just go through this again.”

“You know, if you moved back to the house…” Bette placed the thought out there, awaiting a reaction.

    “Bette, we’re not there yet.”

    “I’m just thinking of Angelica.”

“Even if we were together, we wouldn’t be together every moment.”

    “I suppose.”

Tina took hold of Bette’s hand. “You go get a ride. We’ll talk later.”

“Are you going to be ok?” Bette nodded towards the girl.

“It won’t be fun. But if this is how she’s going to be, I’d rather nip it in the bud than let her think she can keep getting her way by screaming.”

    “I suppose.”

“Go.” Tina’s playful smile indicated the spirit with which the command was given.

With that Bette turned away. The girl’s cries growing, but she forced herself forward. After all, if this is the way Angelica was going to be when her parents were apart, perhaps that meant Bette would get a dose of the same treatment soon enough.

Hurrying towards the car, hoping the out-of-sight theory would help, Tina got the girl into her car seat and passed her rainbow bunny. The loud cries had gone down to a few sobs.

“We are taking the long way home, daughter. And let’s see if I can get you to sleep.”

The ‘s’ word earned a head shake, the word “no”, and a new round of tears.

‘Happy Mother’s Day to me,’ Tina thought to herself as she drove away, Angelica battling the radio to be the loudest sound in the car. ‘We are so taking the long way home.’

    1. Bette must have something up her sleeve, because seriously, she shows up at God knows what time, they get intimate for the first time since???, and then she wants to go catch a ride with the neighbor…plus, where is Bette’s car? Isn’t it at Tina’s? How else did she get there in the middle of the night/early morning. Nope, I think Bette has a real Mother’s Day plan, waiting to put it in action…don’t leave us hanging too long!

    2. I say, Bette should pack and bag and move in with Tina and Angelica until they can all be together in the house. I hate to read that Angelica is crying. It’s not my kid. Spoil her! Thanks for this story, showing the downside of all the lovey-dovey makeup stuff.

    3. Swimmie, always happy to see a new post from you. Enjoying this story and the way you are posting as times of day, etc. Great. I agree, “shoot Jenny now.”

    4. My mom and dad used the car to get me to stop crying when I was Angelica’s age and to this day I get in the car for a long trip and I am out like a light. Of course I am not driving or I may never wake up. This is so cute. I love how all the girls are back together well except for Jenny the freak. Even Kit is doing better. I love your dialogue.

    5. Pseud, Many thanks for another fine chapter in this most excellent of reads. Love Bette’s attempt to talk about they future in the midst of a busy restaurant with a screaming child. Even more pleasing to see Tina stick to her guns re moving back ‘home’ and giving into Angelica’s tantrum. Great way to show how far Tina has come. The gals were wonderful as they quietly accepted the truth between Bette and Tina. They just know that these gals belong together. I do hope Bette calls soon. Lover-ly. Your Loyal Fan.

    6. poor tina bette shulda stayed with her for the day, never mind clothes….anges right for crying mama b shulda been with them…not just left t there…not happy…and shoot jenny now..pps

    7. My sister also said “Happy Mother’s Day to me” she was doing the food shopping to make her own Mother’s Day dinner for her family. As always enjoyed the post.

    8. By the looks of things, if they keep talking (Bette had better call), and don’t rush it (Tina moving back to the house? Bette, c’mon now. Too soon.), Tina hopefully won’t be doing things like calming Angelica down on her own for too much longer. Big gestures, and small steps, but they’re at least moving forward, together. I enjoyed it pseud, as I always do. Thanks for making time to post.

    9. Hey P, what a nice surprise to see you’ve posted. “Jenny rarely looked beyond her own navel…” That made me laugh out loud. You have a real patience with these characters that few writers can match. Thanks for taking the time to flesh out a realistic story for their ever developing relationship. Writing is a good break from stress! Creative outlet and all…More when you can. Thanks!

    10. Wow, this was great. You really captured all the different emotions that each of the girls were experiencing on this Mother’s Day. You are definately in tune with the personalities, and it shows so clearly in the dialect, verbage, and descriptions you use. I think they still have alot of work to do to get at the point where they would be in a “healthy” place to live together though. A little more time, lots of communication, and definately lots of patience. Gotta love little Ange, so true to what a child would be doing when she sees one parent leaving like that. Thanks P, for posting, and how could we forget you?

    11. I think that maybe Bette should get something else for Tina. Something more than a celebration fuck. And Bette is a mother too so maybe she should get something too. I guess Angelica isn’t used to her parents spending so much time together. As usual I enjoyed this. Hopefully Bette won’t hound Tina about moving in. Thanks.

    12. Always greatful for the update. Tina was right in not giving in to Angelica w/the tantrum, she’ll get use to it, especially if they stick to trying to work things out. Bette did kinda jump the gun with the moving in part, but at least she’s letting Tina know she does really want her. Maybe they’ll have a quiet yet romantic Mother’s Day evening.

    13. ‘Happy Mother’s Day to me,’ Tina thought to herself as she drove away, Angelica battling the radio to be the loudest sound in the car. ‘We are so taking the long way home.’ LMAO!!!!!!! Tina’s right. They are nowhere near ready to live together as a family again. Hopefully they get there.

    14. Ah, that Jenny. Not only an artist of singular originality, but such sparkling conversation. I believe a prior generation would have called her a killjoy. But I’m just not buying that Bette’s only (or even foremost) concern was Angelica when she wafted the idea of Tina moving back to the homestead.

    15. Hmm. Things are still so awkward between them. Bette goes from being aloof to asking Tina to move in with her. They definitely need some more time together soon. I hope Bette calls.. or does something unexpectedly good because this story has shown more of Tina’s inner thoughts about hope for the relationship so far. Angelica is adorable.. even though in real life a crying kid is totally not cute. Thanks for taking the time to write even though you obviously have a hectic real life going on. PPS.
