The phone woke Shane up. She groaned and rolled over to look at the clock. It was 3 a.m. for Christ sake. Shane was no longer the night owl she once was, and she had Angel to thank for that.  Her son was a little burst of energy and he kept her on her toes. Shane reluctantly picked up the phone and when she answered her voice was even huskier than usual.

Shane: Hello

Carmen: Shane he is burning up. I don’t know what to do.

Hearing the panic in Carmen’s voice Shane immediately sat up straighter in bed.

Shane: Carmen calm down. What is happening?

Carmen: It’s Angel. I put him to bed and you know how he sometimes wakes up in the middle of the night.

Shane nodded. Angel inherited his sleeping habits from her.

Carmen:  I went to check on him, and he was lying in the bed wheezing, and when I touched his forehead he was burning up.

Shane: Did you check his temper?

Carmen: Yea Shane and its 103.

Shane raced to get dressed and grabbed her keys.

Shane: Carmen put a cold compress on his head, and rub ice on him. I will be there shortly.

Shane hung up and raced her jeep to Carmen’s house, not bothering to adhere to any speed limits. She barely made it to Carmen’s house in one piece because she almost flipped her jeep over. She hurriedly rang Carmen’s door bell. Shane pushed the door opened as soon as Carmen unlocked it and was met with a tear stricken Carmen.

Shane: Where is he?

Carmen: In my bed. The ice worked a little.

Shane went to Carmen’s room and peered down at her son’s little face. He was sweating profusely and when Shane touched his face it almost burned her skin.

Shane: Hey little buddy. How are you feeling?

Angel: I feel hot mommy.

Shane nodded not trying to alarm Angel or Carmen who was silently sobbing on the bed. Shane realized that she had to be the one to take control in this situation.

Shane: You are hot sweetie, and we’re going to go to the hospital ok.

Carmen’s skin had gone a pale white when Shane mentioned the word hospital, and Angel looked scared too.
