Mi Casa es Su Casa (A Space Between Story). Chapter One.

1995—Before there was a Bette and Tina and even before there was a Bette Porter Gallery where Bette and Tina could meet

It took a while for the buzz of the alarm clock to fulfill its sole daily responsibility.  Bette finally reached up and to the left to shut it off.  When her hand did not feel the utilitarian rounded object, she opened her eyes, groaned, and stretched her arm to the offending object that sat on the floor near her makeshift bed, a mattress on the bare floor. Once silenced, the clock would be unnoticed until the next morning.

Bette gave her body a wake-up stretch along the full length of the mattress, her arms reaching far above her head, a contented groan escaping.  Sitting up, her field of vision captured the face of the clock.  Before her head even acknowledged that it read 8:30, her body had already been swept from top to bottom with a rush of anxiety. A second later, she calmed down, shaking her head when she realized that, for the first morning in almost three months, she could sleep in.  Bette flopped back down on her mattress and considered whether to revel in the cool sheets.  The excitement from the prior evening lingered, though, and she wanted to get to the office.

Bette got up, and headed to make coffee.  As she turned from the short hall towards the kitchen, she tripped.

“FUCK.  Fuck, fuck, fuck.” Bette yelped as the pain in her foot registered.

When she looked down at the offending object, she noticed for the first time her odd sleeping attire.  The combination of the paint stripper on the floor and her grubby T-shirt and sweat pants reminded her that her residual excitement had made it too difficult to sleep the prior night, and she had worked on stripping the paint on the living room baseboards until exhausted.  She took a quick look at her handiwork and was relieved that it was up to standard.  It also explained the late alarm.

When she got to her kitchen, Bette put a small pitcher of water in the microwave to boil, then removed the coffee beans from the freezer.  She pulled the grinder and the French press pot forward on the counter from where they sat next to the backsplash.  As she began the now automatic steps to make her morning coffee, she realized that she had not done this at home for almost two weeks.  It was too time-consuming a process and she vowed that over the weekend she would get a drip machine with the paper cones and an automatic timer for everyday use.

    1. Very good start on this latest one (and I really enjoyed the last one as well, Bette’s lists in the fortune cookie were ace), Spumoni. Melvin, could he be any more of a crusty old sod? I get the impression he was that way when he was in short pants too, no childhood gaiety, just grim, adult bluntness. But he must’ve given in and funded that house, because there Bette sits. And was that woman doing the botched parking job just off Doheny Tina? I’ve gotten a bit “Where’s Tina?” in these stories, I expect her to be round every corner, behind every pillar, under the porch, the shopper holding up the line at the supermarket… yeah. You need to get her a striped shirt and a pair of Potter-esque specs… Anyway, great start, looking forward to more. Thanks!

    2. Ahhh..a totally Bette, and Tina-free fic, what could be better!!! I also really liked the fortune cookie thing. If you are going to get Tina the striped shirt and harry potter glasses, don’t forget the red cap! Always good to remind those who might have forgotten that this was and is Bette’s house.

    3. Is Tina making cameo appearances in your stories just like Hitchcock used to do in his films? I’m thinking along the same lines as jp22, just waiting for Tina to pop up somewhere, clever writing. Melvin is such a stuffed shirt the man needs to kick back sometimes and just go with the flow he might like it then again maybe not he just to regimentated. I must admit to I love the design of Bettes house, in my neck of the woods we call them Bungalows, some of them are truly beautiful with their original stained glass windows and parki flooring. Looking forward to reading more, I really love your style of writing. Thank you.

    4. Just cathing up (must be my middle name) but I’m getting there :O) – love the updates and so many new angles. You have so many new ideas it brings us inspiration – and by christ I need them other wise my story will never be finished. Do post soon
