    make you forget

Helena saw Bette from afar in the waiting room.  Her head hung between her legs, her fingers tangled in her hair.  Helena ran to her and sat beside her.  Bette rested her head on her shoulder.

“They haven’t told me anything.” Bette said, softly.

“It’s cancer.” Kit said, causing Bette to look up.

    “What?”

“She has cancer, she doesn’t have very long to live.  That’s why she’s here.”

“You knew and didn’t tell me?” Bette stood up, “Peggy did you know too?”  Peggy nodded, “Helena?”

Helena refused to look into her eyes, admitting guilt without speaking.

“Really?  You knew too.  Out of all these people in this room, you were the last one I expected to do this to me.  You know how trust is important to me and I trusted you.”

“I know, Bette.” Helena stood up, “But she said that she didn’t want you to know.  I figured, it would be better for her to tell you when she was ready.”

“But how could you keep something like that—something so severe—away from me?”

Before Helena could say anything, the doctor approached them.

“Which one of you is Bette Porter?”

    “It’s me.  How’s my mother?”

    “Let’s speak privately.”

“Okay.”  He led Bette over to the other end of the hallway.

“Her cancer is quite advanced and she definitely has very little time left here.  The cancer has moved into her lungs, so she may find that she has a shortness of breath, likely to knock her out from time to time.”

    “Oh God.”

“I suggest you speak to the counselor we have.  It can really help dealing with death of loved ones.”

“I just want to see her.  Is she available to me?”

He told her where her room was and, soon after, Bette was rarely seen outside of it.

    A week later…

“Where’s Helena?  I haven’t seen her around.” Maxine asked, hoarsely.

“I don’t want to see her.”

    “Why not?”

    “She lied to me.”

    “Bette, get over it.”

“How can I do that?  You know just as much as she knows how much trust means to me.  This is bullshit.”

    1. dang it, 2nd…maybe 1st next time (LOL)anyway, that was sad but at least Maxine gave her daughter some good advice before she passed on. Bette will need Helena and the rest of her fam more than ever now that the mother she just welcomed back into her life is gone. Keep the post coming Ash!

    2. WOW! Maxine passed away really fast, that cancer is so bad it gets you when you least expect it. I knew that Bette would get ticked off at Helena and thank goodness that Maxine gave the best advice to her daughter to go get her girl. I do hope that Bette will be able to continue to see things better after her mother’s death. And loved Al for giving the same advice to her best friend Helena and how they both got to the phone at the sametime…love it!

    3. So sad to see Maxine die but thank god she was able to give Bette some advise before she passed away. It’s also a good thing Bette was able to forgive her mother so she won’t feel guilty about that. I’m glad B&H made up again cause Bette’s gonna need her more than ever now. PPS

    4. Awwwwww poor Bette. I just hope Bette doesn’t break down and shut everyone out. Bette will need Helena and the rest of her family more then ever now.

    5. I love this story very much. Great dialogue. Lots of emotions in the writing. I especially like this line “She’s gorgeous. You’re gorgeous. You belong together”
