Beth, exactly how big is the house? Dana stared at the large house in apprehension.

Big, thats all, dont worry, theyll love you. Beth tried to reassure her lover.

Um okay Dana tried a smile but was too nervous.

Hey, do I get a hand with the cases and duffel bags?

Sure. Dana was glad to have a distraction even a momentary one.

Thank – you.

They get the bags and cases, and take them in; Beth leads them up to her room.

This is your room? Dana was amazed at the size of the top floor room.

Yeah, Ive had the same one since I was four. Beth began to remember many Christmases.

Its nice. Dana was still amazed and starting to feel better about the entire situation.

Thanks, sodo you want to meet the family? Beth was apprehensive about this as she wasnt out and had no idea of what her family would say but it was a now or never situation she rationalised.

Yeah of course I do. Dana was using forced cheer but it worked.

The women walk down stairs to be met by Anna, Beths little sister.

Beth!

Anna, hi sweetheart!

Whilst they hug Anna says:

I thought you were bringing your partner? Anna looks confused by Danas presence.

I did. Beth knew this was her first big milestone.

Anna breaks the embrace and mutters something about going to tell everyone else.

What was that about? Dana asked confused by Annas quick departure.

Beth starts to speak but is interrupted by her mother.

Bethany, darling I thought youd never arrive! Tasha cried embracing her eldest.

Hi mum! I missed you!

We missed you too Beth. Her dad interrupted

They all went and sat in the living room after Beth put the presents under the tree. Beth picked up on the fact that none of her brothers, sisters, or in laws were looking at her. She realised that Anna had told everyone that she was ***** and they couldnt handle it.

Hey whats wrong with you lot? Beths Grandma asked.

Nothing Gran. Darren and Elliot answered.

Oh for goodness sake grow up you lot. Its not that big a deal. Beth told them.

What isnt that big a deal Bethany?

ImIm ***** Gran, and they cant handle it. Beth said trying hard to keep a steady voice and eye contact at the same time.

Oh, umwell. Mrs Jones looked stunned.

Bloody ridiculous, ***** I ask you, our Bethany? Bloody sweet-talking from that woman (indicating towards Dana). Our Bethany isnt like that. Beths Grandfather piped up.

Dana looked over at Beth and saw a mixture of hurt and anger in her eyes, one shed never seen before. But before she could say something to calm her down.

Why are you all so bloody narrow minded? Ive known I was ***** since I was 13, oh, and Dana isnt my first girlfriend, Ive been with 2 other women, not that you noticed. And these past 4 months with Dana have been the best Ive ever had.

Beth gets up with tears cascading down her face and leaves the room, Dana automatically gets up, but before leaving the room she turns to the family and says:

Beth spent most of the plane trip trying to decide how to tell you all. She loves you so much and would hate to hurt you, but why cant you be a little bit happy for us? I really love Beth and wouldnt do anything to upset her the way you just did.

Dana leaves and sees Beth sat at the kitchen table.

Hey baby, dont cry.

Beth looks up at her with her tear stained face and Dana bends down and wraps her arms around Beth who stands up and cries into her shoulder.

Shhhhhh, Baby its OK. Dana slowly swayed side to side.

Beths family stood in the doorway and watched as this woman comforted her. They suddenly realised how much theyd hurt her.

So youve been together 4 months? Her brother Darren ventured.

Yeah. Beth answered.

So, umIm Darren.

Im Dana Fairbanks, nice to meet you.

Im Elliot, this is Louise and Anna.

Dana noticed how much Beth and her brothers looked alike and like their dad; Louise and Anna looked like their mother, curvier and darker, quite a difference.

Annas husband came up and put his hands on her shoulders.

This is Luke, Luke this is my girlfriend Dana.

Hi.

And thats Rosie, Darrens wife, Yasmin, Elliots wife and Jason, Louises husband. She pointed to each in turn.

Hey dont I and your mother get introduced? Tony interrupted.

Fine, this is my mum, and my dad, mum, dad this is Dana.

Nice to meet you. Dana said.

You too Dana, Its Tasha and Tony, by the way. Your grandparents have gone home now.

They all moved into the living room so Beth could introduce all of her nieces and nephews.

(A/N: Ok so it’s not a great chapter but it’s necessary, and I’ve got a Christmas surprise or two planned.)
