    Living for Love: Chapter 23

Dana was sitting in Alice’s work chair thinking about how things probably should be. She was thinking on how to make things easier for both of them. Alice’s idea on moving in together was very tempting but that still left Dana very worried about being a burden, and where to put her stuff or if she’d be able to keep most of it all. Alice was in the shower and was trying to sort things out as well. Even hearing Gloria Gaynor’s "I Will Survive" in her head wasn’t really doing it for her. Whene Alice got out of the shower and got into her tanktop and pants, she found Dana on the right side of the coffee table.

    Alice asked, ‘What’s up?’

    Dana said, ‘I’m thinking.’

    Alice said, ‘Yeah. And..’

Dana said, ‘I’m thinking about what you said last night. About living together.’

    Alice said, ‘Yeah.’

Dana said, ‘I mean it was sweet. It really was.’

    Alice asked, ‘Dana…what’s wrong?’

Dana hid her face inside her hands and sniffled her nose back.

Dana said, ‘I just don’t want to be a burden to you.’

Alice looked at Dana in disbelief. Dana looked at the expression on Alice’s face when she sat down on her wooden chair and the only thing between them was the coffee table. Alice wasn’t getting ready to cryor anything. But Alice was feeling a little heavy in the tear ducts.

    Alice asked, ‘Dana…what’s wrong? W..what’s….wrong?’

Dana saw Alice was now worried on what was going on. She’d just gotten out of the shower, sat down, and now it felt like they were back where they were a year ago, at night, with both of them crying their eyes out, and one of them leaving.

    Dana said, ‘I’m trying…to say th..that…’

    Alice asked, ‘Please…no.’

Dana replied, ‘No, no, no, no’ as she walked over to Alice’s side, kneeled down, took Alice’s hand, and kissed the backside of it. She wasn’t breaking up. She wasn’t going to repeat the largest mistake of her life all over again. Not when they’d found love for a second time. After she kissed Alice’s hands on her knees, Dana looked up to face Alice and said, ‘I Love You.’ Then there was a pause before Dana said, ‘And I…would love..to live…with you.’ Then she kissed Alice’s lips saying ‘right now’ and kissed Alice on the lips. And this made Alice fall from the chair to the floor, with tears in her eyes, embracing Dana with all her strength.

Under her tears, Alice muttered, ‘I never want to lose you.’

Embracing Alice back, a crying Dana said, ‘I know. I’m right here.’

Crying in happiness, Alice repeated, ‘I never want to lose you.’

Dana said, ‘Ssshhh. I’m right here. It’s alright. I’m right here. I promise.’ Kissing the top of Alice’s head, Dana repeated, ‘I promise.’

Putting both her hands on Alice’s cheeks, and facing Alice with tears in their eyes, Dana said, ‘You will never lose me.’ Then she kissed Alice’s lips, whispering ‘I Love You.’ Then she laid Alice’s head on her shoulder.

Dana knew Alice was worried about what was going to happen to them. Dana said, ‘I made my decision a long time ago that you are never going to lose me, and I am never going to lose you.’ It wasn’t to ease Alice’s nerves, but Dana kissed Alice on the shoulder then she repeated, ‘I promise.’ This was just like when Alice promised to take care of Dana when she pushed Lara too far. All that was missing was the German song "Wer Bin Ich" by Lafee. Even though the title translated into "Who Am I", Dana knew who she was and what she wanted.

They went over to Dana’s place to collect her financial records, monthly bank statements, and her portfolio on stocks and bonds. When they got back to Alice’s, Dana had the full run of the living room. A pool table would’ve been big enough for all the reports she collected over the years. Her assets weren’t frozen but they weren’t all that easy to access like a simple bank withdrawal. All Dana could do was find out how much she sort of had and where it all was.
