Life Happens: London Can’t Get Rid of These Two

“This is boring.” Bette said with a yawn.  They lounged on the couch, their arms loosely around one another, watching a movie on Channel 4.  Casablanca took awhile to warm up, but Helena was already engrossed. “Gawd, who’s the weirdo she’s with?”

“Mhmm…I can never remember his name.” Helena shrugged. “Funny looking little guy, isn’t he?”

“yep. So what did everyone say about us leaving?” Bette was distracted from the movie as Helena’s hair seemed too good a place to nuzzle and doze against. She yawned again, barely listening to the response.

“Alice will visit when she can, perhaps in a few weeks.  Jenny and Shane think it’s a perfectly fine idea on our part. Kit wants to come with Alice, from what I understand, though she was too busy to take the call—rush in the Planet just as I called Alice’s cell.  Tina wants you to find a job here. She thinks that this is an exciting new move for you. And if you find one, she’ll bring Angelica.”

With that, Bette was wide awake. “you mean to live…here?” She whispered.

Helena nodded. “Or at least to live part time. She can work in the film industry here. It’s not like Los Angeles, but the movies themselves are arguably far better.”

Bette was silent for a long time. “wow.” She said at last. “We could stay here then…just…stay here. In England…” She drew out the sound of that name, trying it on for size. “And Catherine…” She mumbled.

“Cannot do a blasted thing to me.” Helena said defiantly. “Mother is back on it, and either way, I won’t be deported by anybody here. The whole issue will just simmer away until Catherine grows bored with it. To hell with going to jail for something so stupid—the DA has better things to pursue in Los Angeles.”

“And my job?” Bette added with a snicker.

“You, my brilliant genius darling…online teaching, indeed.” Helena’s hands ran lazily around her girlfriend’s lower back.

The whole thing had been too easy, as it turned out.  Phyllis was thrilled to help the clandestine lesbian getaway. It was all too exciting, as she said more than once during their ‘top secret’ meeting.  Phyllis had a list of contacts for Bette to deal with in the UK—previous donors who had relocated to England, potential donors who were moving back to the United States—and of course a whole list of grants.  Along with two online art history courses, the work would keep her busy for at least a few months, if not longer.

    1. Though ITA with Bette (and The Guardian’s Henry Porter) that Britain is slipping into totalitarianism, she should resist the urge to advertise the fact at Gatwick Airport. Sadly, as far as I know, EZ is still a producer. She wrote at least one of S4’s episodes and I detect her baleful influence in the S5 previews. Sorry I caused you such (perfectly understandable) alarm with the whispering Jenny scare, but you seem to have nipped the condition in the bud. And that, as Martha would say, is a good thing.

    2. Aww I wish we could have this pairing on the show. Er no I don’t…cuz then it would just be effed up by IC instead of being nurtured by the wonderful HB.

    3. Bette and Jun Ying’s airport banter was funny, to say the least…they seem so good together…it was cute…I can see Phyllis being very excited about the move, being that she’s a newbie and pretty excited about all things lesbian…pps

    4. OK, alright, no orgies. I wouldn’t want you to do anything contrary to your principles. If 4 is the cut off, I say ditch Jody and get Debbie! Well, a whole new life in London and a lot less baby sitters. At least Peggy’s on the case to get things sorted out. But Bette really needs to cool it in airports these days. If she was antsy with the usual customs line, just think how long they could detain her with the politcal comments, all in the name of antiterrorism. What’s the point of springing Helena from jail just to get Bette back behind bars (and possibly getting it on with fellow inmates in a masturbatory, wall-facing way)?

    5. oh, no, i don’t have a principled stand *against* orgies, i just find the concept of having one, boring. but i’m feeling like this might be turning into a challenge…i could have helena and bette attend an orgy in london somewhere. hmmm…
