Chapter five

Dana’s alarm dutifully bleeped at silly o’clock. Alice covered her head with a pillow thinking that the alarm seemed louder than usual, she then swore as it was not stopping until she opened her eyes and saw a different view of the room than she usually did when she woke up.

After a few moments, she realised she was, in fact, in Dana’s bed. She reached her arm across and turned off the alarm before running to the toilet to be sick.

Dana stirred at the sound of wretching and decided she also needed to be sick. Dana reached the toilet and shoved Alice across to make room for her head to hang over the bowl too. Once their stomachs were empty they stumbled back to their own beds and went straight back to sleep for the day.

 They awoke once again in the late afternoon and took some tablets to stop their headaches. ‘Ugh, you said we wouldn’t get too drunk’ Dana said to Alice who looked as bad as the brunette felt. ‘Well so did you Fairbanks’ Alice countered.

 ‘I don’t remember that.’ Dana argued. ‘Whatever, we both got drunk so we are both to blame’ Alice resolved. Dana did not have a comeback for this, so simply murmured in response and slowly sat up before switching on the television.

After flicking through all of the available channels she switched it back off and turned on the radio. The station was playing British singer Beverley Knight’s ‘Why me, why you, why now?’ Dana thought that this was very apposite considering her feelings towards her roommate.

Once the song finished, Alice observed ‘Wow! That woman has an amazing voice! Why haven’t I heard of her before?’ Dana simply replied ‘Probably because I’ve only ever heard you play rock or cheesy pop, not soulful and funky pop songs like that was.’ ‘I am sooo going to google her when I find the strength to sit up and use my laptop’ Alice joked,

Dana got up and passed Alice the laptop ‘Knock yourself out’. ‘Thanks Dana’.

Alice typed ‘Beverley Knight’ into google and then youtube and was extremely impressed with her live performances.

‘I need to have this woman’s c.d, like now.’ She said. Dana took a mental note of this for future reference, as Alice’s birthday was just a few weeks down the line.

 Dana, picked up her own laptop and went straight to Amazon to find this British singer’s album.

After having no luck there, she resorted to ebay and found what she thought would be perfect; a greatest hits collection of Knight’ songs. She clicked on buy it now and seemed happy at the price of it too.

Now she just had to make sure Alice didn’t buy it before her birthday.
