    Lest I Forget (2)

The doctors brought Alice out of her coma at about eleven that morning. I’d barely had time to call the kids, but I guess it didn’t really matter. Kallie was having a hard time of it at work, and after checking with the doctors I reassured her that it’d be perfectly fine for her to wait until tonight to come by and see her mom. I knew Alice would have wanted it that way anyway.

Charlie said he’d be there as soon as he’d stopped by the studio and checked into getting a sub for SportsCenter that day, but I told him not to bother with that and to just show up after he was done. He got a little mad at that and tried to fight me on it, but stopped his protests immediately when I told him that his mom would want him to stay and do his job. It was how we’d raised him, after all…raised both of them, to finish what they’d started.

What I didn’t mention to them was that I wanted some time alone with her before they got there. I know that must sound bad, but I wanted to sit with her and remember the things we’d been through, all the times we’d had before the kids came along. I somehow knew Al would want it that way. Of course, she’d want the kids to be here too for their stories, and I fully intended them to be, but first I wanted to tell her how much I loved her. It wasn’t that I didn’t want the kids to hear it, exactly. Alice and I had always been very affectionate in front of them, and we’d never tried to hide that from them. Still, I wanted some private time with her, to really be able to tell her what she meant to me without having an audience present.

After the kids, I called Shane. I’d have called Tina and Helena, too, but Shane did what she’d always been so great at doing and said she’d call them for me, and that she’d be by later. I hung up thankful that my friends were still so fantastic and reliable.

The neurologist, whose name was Dr. Hernandez, came in not half an hour after I’d finished my phone calls. He made some pleasant conversation with me for a few minutes before delving into what was going to happen, and I found myself being immensely grateful for it. Throughout my treatments, Kallie’s illness and even after Charlie’s surgery, I’d encountered a lot of doctors with no bedside manner whatsoever. Dr. Hernandez (“Call me Josh, please,” he insisted) was exactly the opposite of that. He was friendly, and it was really comforting. He mentioned that his wife was a tennis fan, and that she’d often commented on my career. His friends had all read Al’s books, which wasn’t exactly surprising since she’d been touted as the “Next Great American Author” for years now.

    1. After two chapters I am in awe. You are doing a wonderful job writing this from Dana’s perspective, and I look forward to her further recounting their lives together. I somehow have a feeling I will need tissues handy…

    2. I read this as soon as I saw it posted, but, wanted to re-read it before commenting. I really love this story and you know how I feel about your writing (although I am sorry to hear it springs from insomnia. Insomnia sucks). I love the details and the honesty with which you write — it seems so real to the characters. Things aren’t always perfect in relationships, but, if you are in the right one, you can work through it and be stronger. I guess I didn’t realize from the first chapter that Alice would be so “with it”. What a blessing to be able to say goodbye and know the person has heard it. Love the non-verbal communication the girls have after so many years together. I do have to keep reminding myself that they have had 37-38 years together because some of this is just so sad. Thanks for the great story!

    3. This is such a great story. I look forward to hearing more about their life together. I love the way even though Alice can’t talk you give her such a strong voice.

    4. Wow, beautifully written as always and so realistic. People always assume that if you’re old then it’s somewhat ok when it’s your time, not really understanding that sometimes it’s worse. Thank you so much for your dedication too, means a lot :)

    5. you made me cry! hahahah and I don’t cry much:) guess that changes now huh? hehe thanks for updating, this is a wonderful story. I don’t know what I would do if I were Dana in that situation. This is very well written, thanks! you’re awesome… PPS?;D

    6. Thank you for this wonderful 2nd chapter.Realistic and wonderfully written as you always manage to do. I’m just in awe.And to read about their getting back together and their life together is really nice. I probably could say more about this story, but I can’t keep really form the words right now. And english not being my 1st language sucks at this point, lol. Can’t wait for the next chapter.

    7. And again you leave me speechless. Well done! Excellent! I could go on and on with those kind of superlatives when I talk about this story. I hope the next chapter contains memories of Danish with their family. I would love to know how does two were as mums.
