Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter Sixteen
Bette was nearly hyperventilating with anger. Her hands were clenched into fists on the table, her body was so tight she looked like she’d break. Alice watched her with alarm. She knew all of Bette’s signs that said an explosion was eminent.
“Chill, Bette,” Alice whispered.
Bette turned to look at her, ready to beat her down with a stare, but only saw love and worry in Alice’s eyes. She sighed, sucked her lips into her mouth, blinked a few times, then turned to face front.
“I believe as this case is presented, your Honor, you will see a systematic and methodical plan for the current Medical Power of Attorney to control Miss Tina Kennard every step of the way. I will present documentation that Miss Porter has for the past eight years and especially the last three years attempted to place Miss Kennard in a position of powerlessness where even her clothin’ choices had to be Miss Porter’s choice; that she wasn’t allowed to have friends outside of Miss Porter’s group of friends; and her financial situation was one hundred percent dependent on Miss Porter’s willin’ness to share her monies with her.” Stephanie grinned broadly. Her dark eyes bright and joyful as she listened to her attorney ream the lesbian bitch. “You will see a woman who demanded daily reports on Miss Kennard’s health, who badgered doctors durin’ the patient’s comatose phase, and then when Miss Kennard was recoverin’, this woman chose to leave the state to pursue loftier pursuits of art and politics while ignorin’ the daily grind of carin’ for and bein’ available to the person relyin’ solely on her input for survival.”
Bette’s mouth fell open and she breathed out the beginnings of the word “Whuh. . .?”
“Hush. Let him finish,” Whit advised.
“And, your Honor, as much as my client is grateful that Miss Porter was on the scene to get her sister proper medical attention when she needed it, we believe and think you will agree, Miss Porter is also responsible for Miss Tina Kennard’s perilous state of health. Miss Porter purchased the unconventional water birthin’ tank that Miss Kennard used in her initial efforts to deliver her child; Miss Porter chose to deliver the child with the help of a woman who does not have a medical degree of any sort, but a midwife, as if this were the 1800s and not the 21st century. I grew up near Stone Mountain in Georgia, so I know country when I see it your Honor, and this midwife business couldn’t be more backwood if it tried. Miss Porter did not seek emergency treatment right away even though it was evident that Miss Kennard was wagin’ an internal physical battle as her temperature soared. At the hospital, Miss Porter, instead of leavin’ the delivery room insisted on not only bein’ in attendance, but participatin’ in the delivery includin’ the cuttin’ of the umbilical cord. This is not only unheard of in most hospitals, but it is unprofessional, unsanitary, and against most rules. Miss Porter insisted however. That will be somethin’ that we will undoubtedly take up with the hospital at some point. Further, your Honor, in another glarin’ example of Miss Porter’s influence and powers of persuasion, while Miss Tina Kennard’s fever was well over 100, while she suffered a severe loss of blood, was nearin’ unconsciousness havin’ just delivered her child, and urgently needed to be placed in Intensive Care, Miss Porter demanded that Miss Kennard’s child be named a Porter family name instead of any of several names that Miss Kennard had chosen.”

wow…30 pages, it took me almost 2 hours to read LOL but i’m a slow reader and this chapter was very engaging…can someone please run stephanie over with a car and then do it again and again and again? i can’t stand that b****….i hope tina is okay and will feel better soon and continue to stand by bette…bringing in peter was genious idea…great chapter
That’s awesome! I don’t like violence, but I kind of think it’s a good idea if Peter came with a gun and shoot Stephanie and Henry in the court! lol
Damn girl…this was awesome! I thought I was in the freakin courtroom. Thank you for posting. I don’t even know where to begin. I just want to beat the sh*t out of Stephanie and that lawyer and the doctor. Please let Bette win this. Oh my god my blood is boiling. Did Stephanie get the dr. to drug Tina so she would leave the courtroom? What’s up with that? I hope he loses his license. And Franklin (the fat f*ck) I hope his precious CAC closes down! I would say post soon but your fingers probably fell off from typing all this…lol but yeah please post again soon.
Ms.Richardson you are one hell of a wtiter.I love how you update with many pages.
Wow, intense, spectacular, simply amazing…you are truely a professional, and if not you sure as hell should be!!! That was the best chapter yet. From the first sentence to the last. What a brilliant idea to bring Peter in like that at the end, pls post your next soon, I can’t wait to see how she gets her ass out of that mess. Hopefully that is also the lynchpin for Bette as well. My blood pressure does a number from one page to the next and you now in so much uncharted territory that I don’t know where you will take us. But pls be gentle, we love you, I love you, god this is great…sorry I’m gushing…thankyou
absolutely amazing. i also felt like i was in the courtroom watching everything unfold. awesome work and thanks for the dedication it takes to product this kind of update.
A herkin long story we have here, and every page a feast..this is so well crafted. You have true skill Portia!!!! I felt so bad for Bette, to have one’s mistakes and things said in anger or despair and taken out of context, exposed in public.. I felt so bad for her. I have wondered the same thing about Stephanie as the Dr did..I know she is doing this to screw Bette but what if she wins and Tina goes south again..what is Stephanie going to do? Even if she does just stick her in an institution and leave her there, is she going to pay all the expenses? Also, I thought, though I could be wrong, that parental next of kin has more weight than sibling, so I was wondering why Theresa doesn’t stop this. Why isn’t Theresa doing anything and everything humanly possible to stop her evil spawn?? She is like slightly pissed at Stephanie but not doing anything at all. Bringing Peter was ingenious but also puzzling..what is a bigoted Southern woman doing with a black man? I think this might throw Stephanie off a bit but it’s not going to completely derail her, it’s not enough. I am up for the running over of Stephanie..several times!!!! She so shows the hypocrisy of so many of the Christian right. A question to ponder, why does Stephanie hate Tina, or is she unable to truly love anyone, possibly due to Theresa’s abandonment?
I’m sorry…I’m not finished reading but I just thought I should comment before other things get in the way. Portia? ‘The quality of mercy is not strained…’ Portia? Hm. There’s so much depth in your story and ambiance and texture and…stuff. This reads like a fine book. I wish you continued success with your writing and I look forward to continuing my read of this chapter and starting on the next one you pen.
Holy crap that was long, not that I mind, I loved it. Hell would be to good for Stephanie I don’t know what you have planed for her but I hope she gets hers…I feel terrible for Bette and even worse for Tina, having to go through all this bullshit on top of everything else that is going on. I can’t wait for the next chapter so get to it and start writting lol.
Portia, all I can say is WOW! A fabulous installment, and an excellent courtroom cliffhanger too! Hee!
I am very impressed by the writing of these courtroom scenes. They are really involved and detailed and they must have been challenging to write but you made it look easy. Terrific! I am worried about Tina though.
Oh happy day, an update from Portia! Your author’s note made me laugh and reminded me of the “Office” when Michael always says ‘that’s what she said.’ I’m glad B&T had a chance to talk, I hope she isn’t getting sick again. Have I mentioned how much I hate Stephanie? I think she used her private talks with Tina and wrote those emails herself. She’s a crazy biatch. Sitting on the edge of my seat, waiting for the next post. Thanks Portia.
Wow! this story is so fucking good! Just Wow!!
This was freakin’ unbelievable. You must be a law student, lawyer or para legal. What outstanding dialogue. So intense, interesting….just a home run. Words can not adequately describe how excellent this is.
Fabulous update and the courtroom drama is amazing. I remain concerned for Bette and Tina – this is an awful lot of dirty washing to have disclosed. Also worried about Shane and Carmen (who needs to get over herself – she knew what she was getting in Shane)
Oh my, I didn’t see that coming. What a treat to see a post from you! I’m glad that Tina and Bette had a chance to talk and FINALLY Tina told her that the pill are making her mind confused. I am sure they are going to be able to find something that won’t disturb her! Thanks for your effort in this story!
Great chapter once again. Loving this story. Can’t wait for the next 30 pages… hopefully soon.
WOW!!!! What A great update. Thank you
I just absolutely love this story. It’s like Christmas morning every time I see you’ve posted. Great stuff!
Oh my God ,that took forever to read. But I loved it, This is one great and amazing story. I hope everything works out. Tina finally telling the “truth” or what she wants. Giveing that Stephanie en kick back to hell, because I’m sure that’s where she’s from. Post soon :)
Great update, maybe now Bete and Tina can ge everything together .Steph. boyfriend is A/A. was that a surprise. thanks
Wow – that was an epic session! It’s taken all day – with numerous interruptions, but what a ride! Somebody please sort out Stephanie. I’m don’t believe for one moment that Tina wrote those emails – they just don’t have her voice. Terrific update – more again soon please.
Portia, you write 30 pages and leave me begging for more!
