Laid Up: Another Season 3 – Chapter Sixteen

Stephanie was incapable of ignoring Tina’s message to Bette: the wearing of the long blonde wig that Bette found so objectionable, a plain conservative dress that Stephanie had purchased for her, and choosing not to sit on Bette’s side of the courtroom.  It didn’t matter that Tina hadn’t sat with Stephanie, either.  There seemed to be trouble in Tina’s queer paradise and that was such a good thing in Stephanie’s mind.  If she weren’t in court, she would have relished this moment a bit more by holding her shoulders in an evil shrug and maniacally rubbing her hands together as if to say, ‘oh, come to me my little pretty.’  She settled for smiling at Tina who sat several feet away in the aisle near the courtroom doors.  Bette’s eyes shifted from Tina and across the courtroom.  She hadn’t even noticed Helena’s arrival, but there she sat behind Carmen.  Bette’s eyes moved across to the plaintiff’s table.  Stephanie was wearing the expected large gold cross, so big that it made her look like an LA rapper wearing her bling, then a good Christian praising her Lord.  Stephanie had on a very plain gray suit that was ill-fitting, but Bette suspected that was the point—Stephanie wasn’t interested in her clothing, only Tina’s health.  Stephanie’s urge to gloat couldn’t be squashed.  She looked at Bette and smiled faintly, angled her face to the side, and lifted a victorious eyebrow.   Stephanie bared her teeth in what should have been a grin, but was nothing short of a feral grimace.

Stephanie’s attorney, Randolph McGhee grinned, too.  His tobacco-stained teeth looked like a tiny yellow picket fence in his mouth.  He wasn’t an attractive man, but he was a smart one.  McGhee was not lacking in optimism about this case.  He was looking forward to wiping the floor with Whittington March.  There was so much about this case that got him worked up—he hated homosexuals and thought lesbians in particular were abominations; he hated confident women like Bette Porter.  There was nothing worse than a woman who didn’t know her place.  He despised foreigners and Whittington March with his uppercrust accent and sharp suit made him want to spit.  He loved the idea of commanding these ‘blue state’ homos and their allies with the power of a conservative, intellectual who was educated at Harvard, and a practiced and experienced lawyer from the South.  He was no fucking Matlock; he was no country lawyer with down-home sensibilities.  He knew his way in, out, and around the law and was quick and slick.

    2. That’s awesome! I don’t like violence, but I kind of think it’s a good idea if Peter came with a gun and shoot Stephanie and Henry in the court! lol

    3. Damn girl…this was awesome! I thought I was in the freakin courtroom. Thank you for posting. I don’t even know where to begin. I just want to beat the sh*t out of Stephanie and that lawyer and the doctor. Please let Bette win this. Oh my god my blood is boiling. Did Stephanie get the dr. to drug Tina so she would leave the courtroom? What’s up with that? I hope he loses his license. And Franklin (the fat f*ck) I hope his precious CAC closes down! I would say post soon but your fingers probably fell off from typing all this…lol but yeah please post again soon.

    4. Wow, intense, spectacular, simply amazing…you are truely a professional, and if not you sure as hell should be!!! That was the best chapter yet. From the first sentence to the last. What a brilliant idea to bring Peter in like that at the end, pls post your next soon, I can’t wait to see how she gets her ass out of that mess. Hopefully that is also the lynchpin for Bette as well. My blood pressure does a number from one page to the next and you now in so much uncharted territory that I don’t know where you will take us. But pls be gentle, we love you, I love you, god this is great…sorry I’m gushing…thankyou

    5. absolutely amazing. i also felt like i was in the courtroom watching everything unfold. awesome work and thanks for the dedication it takes to product this kind of update.

    6. A herkin long story we have here, and every page a feast..this is so well crafted. You have true skill Portia!!!! I felt so bad for Bette, to have one’s mistakes and things said in anger or despair and taken out of context, exposed in public.. I felt so bad for her. I have wondered the same thing about Stephanie as the Dr did..I know she is doing this to screw Bette but what if she wins and Tina goes south again..what is Stephanie going to do? Even if she does just stick her in an institution and leave her there, is she going to pay all the expenses? Also, I thought, though I could be wrong, that parental next of kin has more weight than sibling, so I was wondering why Theresa doesn’t stop this. Why isn’t Theresa doing anything and everything humanly possible to stop her evil spawn?? She is like slightly pissed at Stephanie but not doing anything at all. Bringing Peter was ingenious but also puzzling..what is a bigoted Southern woman doing with a black man? I think this might throw Stephanie off a bit but it’s not going to completely derail her, it’s not enough. I am up for the running over of Stephanie..several times!!!! She so shows the hypocrisy of so many of the Christian right. A question to ponder, why does Stephanie hate Tina, or is she unable to truly love anyone, possibly due to Theresa’s abandonment?

    7. I’m sorry…I’m not finished reading but I just thought I should comment before other things get in the way. Portia? ‘The quality of mercy is not strained…’ Portia? Hm. There’s so much depth in your story and ambiance and texture and…stuff. This reads like a fine book. I wish you continued success with your writing and I look forward to continuing my read of this chapter and starting on the next one you pen.

    8. Holy crap that was long, not that I mind, I loved it. Hell would be to good for Stephanie I don’t know what you have planed for her but I hope she gets hers…I feel terrible for Bette and even worse for Tina, having to go through all this bullshit on top of everything else that is going on. I can’t wait for the next chapter so get to it and start writting lol.

    9. I am very impressed by the writing of these courtroom scenes. They are really involved and detailed and they must have been challenging to write but you made it look easy. Terrific! I am worried about Tina though.

    10. Oh happy day, an update from Portia! Your author’s note made me laugh and reminded me of the “Office” when Michael always says ‘that’s what she said.’ I’m glad B&T had a chance to talk, I hope she isn’t getting sick again. Have I mentioned how much I hate Stephanie? I think she used her private talks with Tina and wrote those emails herself. She’s a crazy biatch. Sitting on the edge of my seat, waiting for the next post. Thanks Portia.

    11. This was freakin’ unbelievable. You must be a law student, lawyer or para legal. What outstanding dialogue. So intense, interesting….just a home run. Words can not adequately describe how excellent this is.

    12. Fabulous update and the courtroom drama is amazing. I remain concerned for Bette and Tina – this is an awful lot of dirty washing to have disclosed. Also worried about Shane and Carmen (who needs to get over herself – she knew what she was getting in Shane)

    13. Oh my, I didn’t see that coming. What a treat to see a post from you! I’m glad that Tina and Bette had a chance to talk and FINALLY Tina told her that the pill are making her mind confused. I am sure they are going to be able to find something that won’t disturb her! Thanks for your effort in this story!

    14. Oh my God ,that took forever to read. But I loved it, This is one great and amazing story. I hope everything works out. Tina finally telling the “truth” or what she wants. Giveing that Stephanie en kick back to hell, because I’m sure that’s where she’s from. Post soon :)

    15. Wow – that was an epic session! It’s taken all day – with numerous interruptions, but what a ride! Somebody please sort out Stephanie. I’m don’t believe for one moment that Tina wrote those emails – they just don’t have her voice. Terrific update – more again soon please.

    16.
