Laid Up: Another Season 3– Chapter 24
The computer was ready and she set up the phone call. The webcam was on, but she had moved the camera so it wouldn’t be so close to her face. She hoped that it wasn’t obvious that she was having a tough morning. Helena listened as the phone rang and was picked up before the second ring was complete.
“Mummy,” said Wilson.
“Hello, Wilson. How is my little monkey today?”
“Oh, Mummy, we’re so excited about coming to California. Will you take us to Disneyland?”
“Of course, my darling.”
“Could we go to work with you?”
“I don’t know if you’d like it. It’s not that interesting.”
“Do you know Shrek, Mummy?”
The conversation continued and after a while Wilson turned his end of the phone over to his sister. Helena wanted to be as normal as possible, but it was too hard to speak. She couldn’t stand it. She kept their conversation brief.
* * * * *
At the monastery, Bette and the group of students had completed their a ‘walking meditation’ that had begun at five a.m. The students had broken off into 3 small groups and each had been taken to gazebos where they had climbed the stairs and had walked in a circle while meditating. The thirty minute meditation was followed by breakfast taken in silence. Bette didn’t make eye contact with anyone, choosing instead to stay within herself, practicing her meditation without distraction.
Now they were in the large auditorium and were meditating as one large group. Bette wondered how many other students were practicing tonglen; which students were spreading the love, while taking in the disappointment, sadness, anger, and hopelessness of others.
She focused again, reined in her wild mind and recalled her fifteen year college reunion. It was with immense pride that she walked into the formal venue hand-in-hand with Tina. Her ex was there, old friends whom she hadn’t seen in several years, some of her former professors including Professor Palmer. She and Tina sat at a table for ten, but they held court. Bette had been a popular student that women wanted to emulate and men wanted to date. Early, pre-reunion gossip rumored that Bette and Tina were perceived as one of the hot lesbian, power couples in LA. Age had been kind to Bette, her dress was a stunning black designer number with a train that flowed behind her; her hair hadn’t changed much since Yale—though this group didn’t know she’d had a few hairstyles over the years, but had gone back to the long, wavy look recently. Tina, with her hair swept up and held together with carefully placed bejeweled combs, wore an emerald-colored evening gown that was form-fitting with a plunging neckline that looked nothing short of gorgeous. Tina was eye candy, for sure, some might have seen her as an accessory to Bette’s outfit, a hot woman on her arm, but when those old friends and instructors stopped to talk, they saw exactly who Tina was—the love of Bette’s life. Danica Palmer walked over to the table to chat and Bette sat back in her chair, amused by the way Palmer had given Tina the once over. That night, Tina, who could talk to anyone about anything, impressed the stuffy Yale alumni with tales of Hollywood filmmaking, celebrities she’d met, her dream film project, and how she and Bette were looking forward to starting a family one day.

There have been so many hours devoted to this story, on your behalf with writing it, and on mine with reading. I’m the luckier side because reading takes me to a place that I don’t visit often. I get to feel like I’m totally a part of these lives. I don’t feel like I’m on the sideline, I’m a friend they are family. I don’t recall many writers that have that ability to transport their readers thru time like you do…def not on a non-profession level anyway. You are amazing, your writing is of the level of anyone on the Bestseller list. You obviously don’t realize that or else you would be published and not writing for us. You need to change careers, you need to start a new phase of your life that is devoted to writing for the masses, you ARE that good. I am only one of thousands that read your story and jump for joy when you post. Only people consumed with writing and telling good stories write like this, are this dedicated to continuing a story and seeing it to it’s completion. You by far the THE best writer/storyteller on this site. We are blessed with some great stories, and some equally wonderful storytellers, but no one is where you are, where you come from. Can you imagine how much better TLW would have been with your input…but at least we have you here. I love your Tibette, I love your Helena and with Dylan. Danish is beyond funny and their comedic timing is spot on. Sharmen is just hot..and very three dimensional. You give depth to all…I only miss Jenny…opps sorry that was a typo, I don’t miss Jenny, thankyou!! Pls let Helena find Dylan she deserves to be happy, I want to see Danish get married. Pls Pls don’t let anything happen to innocent Angelica…pls Portia, thankyou that was by far and outstanding novella you posted…and I will wait patiently for your next installment…
Well, it didn’t take me days and days to finish. LOL! First thing though, I noticed your notes at the end and how you said that restaurant scene pissed you off. I didn’t get it either and, being one who is easily annoyed by the entitlement attitude some old people have and some of the dumbest things they can say, was NOT thrilled at all with how Tina sat there like a knot on a log instead of correcting the couple. I remember someone bringing that up at L2 last year and Laurel saying that Tina heard stuff like that all the time and just didn’t feel like going into it again. Sadly due to time constraints some things just don’t get explained and Laurel knows that we’re sometimes left unsatisfied. Now onto the story. Just…WOW. Shay is quite intelligent for his age. Too bad he didn’t think about running away before Shane left. Since you’re wrapping up in a few chapters maybe this means we’re going to get a new Season 4 from you? :D This Helena/Dylan bit is just sad. :( I loved them in S3 and love them here. They were smoking hot and made S3 palatable up until Dylan’s departure. I’m really digging Bette’s flashbacks still and must say the poolside union…HOMAN! HOT! Oh and about Jenny, hopefully she’s actually getting some help at home, well, unless this is supposed to be a story by Jenny though I doubt it since it’s actually good and we have no carnival scenes.
first of all… there is NEVER TOO MUCH OF BETTE AND TINA… the rest are just fillers… loved bette’s day dream… now i was hoping stephine would of got on the wrong plane and flew to hell… but there is still a chance of that… PPS
EVERYTHING THAT HONDA90 SAID, AND THEN SOME…
Absolutely incredible. All of the characters are in intricate and interesting storylines. Drama looming everywhere.Bette’s meditation execrcise is a wonderful device to give us so much insight into both B and T and B&T. I have no idea how you manage to do all of this, but I am grateful and hope you don’t stop.
Hey Portia, I was jumping for joy when I saw another fabulous 54 pages of psting from your fair hand. I just love the detail and depth that you have crafted in this tale. If only the TV show had a tenth of your heart then it would be true phenomenal. All of the stories are independant yet intertwined. I really can;t wait to see how this all pans out. Bette needs to come home to sort things out with Tina and deal with Josh once and for all. I wonder what effect missing her meds will have on Tina. I do hope that her mood swings can be addressed and rectified soon. Helena needs to find Dylan to sort things out but that is looking less likely as Dylan flys the coop. Shane and Carmen need to be there for Shay. I hope this little boy gets to LA without any further adventures. Kit and Angus are just loving the good life atm. Alice and Dana seem to be able to avoid the pitfalls of the show and strengthen their relationship by talking things through together. Stephanie needa a wake-up call but I’m not sure that Henry has the backbone to do it. Theresa has to make peace with her daughters and try rto move forward with them both. Great to hear Joyce’s call and see that good things do happen. Oh, and Marcus is being a good father in plaaning for his daugther but doesn’t he have another child? I am sure that is why Bette was so insistent in using his sperm. Anywho, it is your talent that makes me completely addicted to your terrific tale. Thank you so much for allowing me the pleasure of shairng it with you. Your Loyal Fan.
just so friggin good…
This is brilliant storytelling. If only TLW writers were in the same league.
Portia, you rule this site, you really do. This is an outstanding installment that just moves along from character to character and from storyline to storyline with all the fascinating details in between. I’m all for the Bette and Tina story and you just do wonderful, marvelous things with their steamy flashbacks. As always, I’m in awe of the detail the attention to every character and your storytelling. Top notch. Thank you so much.
Thanks for the novel, I too thank you for TiBette.
P.S.: Those two little blue pills are hanging over us, waiting to wreak havoc, aren’t they? I was hoping Marcus would go away quietly. Will he? And Bette is away. I have this feeling it will all come together, whether it’s for good or naught – will Bette make it back to save the day? I’m worried about 1. Helena being distracted or away as Tina is set to come to her house. 2. Stephanie further stirring the mix. 3. Brecker harming Bette or Angelica. And I can’t let go of the missing dosage of those two little blue pills. Thanks!
I read this entire chapter in one setting. I could not stop. This chapter was finely balanced, in that all the story lines are building to a moment of catharsis. Is it possible that they will all crest at the same time? I don’t know how you do it, Portia. Of course, as a loyal Tibetter, I love the sexual emphasis being on Bette and Tina, like a centerpiece with the other stories complementing them with other aspects of life and relationships. There’s so much here: life and death stakes with Dylan and Helena, (of course, there’s danger aplenty with Shay, Brecker and Dana’s date). Kit seems to be the only one not in peril. Seriously, your story seems like the real L Word and the TV series seems like the pale imitation. The time you have taken and the attention you’ve given to detail – your backstory on B&T makes them whole. I love this story. I can’t thank you enough for continuing it. I almost long to know your Bette and Tina in person, that’s how real they are. Thank you.
Like techgal, I read it all in one go… I needed some time to digest. There’s so much going on, Shay running away, Shane’s worry, Sharon’s hushed acceptance, Al + Dana, Stephanie’s return (and when is Peter going to find out about the money?), Dylan’s running, Hels’ pain, Marcus, Josh, Tina’s missed dosages, Bette’s isolation (I think she’s making a little progress over there though)… and that added dose of remembered hotness a la Tibette? Very nice. Your story has everything, Portia. It’s all that and a packet of crisps. And I can’t wait for more! Thank you for the chapter.
Wow, Really, amazing….I’m not sure I can say much else…Oh, thanks, a lot.
oh, steph..still a bitch…i hope henry will see through her and tell her to step off…josh needs to be put away for good and bette has to come home to tina asap…thank you…i’m glad there’s a lot of tibette in this story :)
honda90 has said all that I want . Your writing is so detailed and layered, terribly complex. Just amazing. Your effort is amazing. PPS.
Wow, finally finished! Your writing is unbeleivable portia! Have you considered writing a novel? Because I would so read it! As for as Tibette is concerned, I honestly don’t care for them, but your one of very few writers that makes me care. I would like to see more sharmen, but I’ll take what I can get. Again your a fantastic writer!
To those who would prefer less Bette and Tina, look at the title, and think on how many times people have speculated that S3 was Tina’s dream. I personally would prefer less of some other characters but *sings* you can’t always get what you waaaaaant. Now I’m off to read HOPEFULLY in one sitting.
I am so in love with this story, I was sad to read it would be ending soon. I love the development of the story lines of all the characters, but I’m a TiBetter through and through–you could never write enough about those ladies as far as I am concerned :). Thanks for the update, I loved it. PS please let Tina find her little pills :)
I think I may have said this before but you write the L-word better than the L-word writers.Great imagination
