Just The Girl – Chapter Forty One (a HYD-inspired fic)

“Do you think Porter’s okay?” Alice bit her lip as she opened up her eyes. Sam had promised to call them for updates, but so far, they’ve received no word from the girl. And quite frankly, they were too chicken to pick up the phone and call Bette themselves. Sure, they were feeling mighty guilty about leaving their leader during a crucial time in her life.. but somehow, immense fear overpowered their remorse.. and self-preservation conquered all guilt. They would be good friends and return home in a few days.. but while everything was still fresh, it would be better and safer to stay away from Los Angeles.

“I hope she is.” Shane answered, her brows creased in deep thought. “I know she is.” She corrected herself after a few beats. Bette had always been the strongest one within their group, but recently, she seemed a little invincible – so confident and sure of herself. A few months ago, they were way ahead of their leader in the maturity department. But now, she could say with certainty that they were greatly lagging behind Bette. Bette Porter has definitely grown stronger and wiser in the arms of Tina Kennard. “She’ll be fine. Remember how determined she was the other day? You can’t be that sure if you’re not on to something. I totally have faith that Bette’s gonna make it on her own.” She mused, taking out a cigarette from inside a silver case and placing it in between her lips.

“She’s not really on her own. She has you, me and Sam.. and of course, Kennard watching her back.” Alice added as she threw her pink lighter in Shane’s direction. The brunette caught the object with one hand, flicked it open with her thumb, and proceeded to light her death stick.

“The “you and me” part doesn’t ring true at this very moment.” Shane slid the lighter across the table and back to Alice. “After all, we’re boozing it up in Vegas while Bette’s in LA, facing poverty as we speak.” She puffed on her stick and sighed ruefully. She felt like an awful friend right now. “Al? What do you say we come out of hiding and head back home tomorrow morning?” She asked the blonde as she exhaled smoke through her mouth and nostrils. Her hair would grow back.. the face paint would rub off.. she would suffer through her punishment for the sake of friendship, she had no right to hide, it was all her fault.
