CHAPTER TWENTY TWO, PART THREE: The Dilemmas of a Guilty Conscience
I went home from Antonio’s with my thoughts going a hundred miles per minute – faster than the speed my car was going. The ride home was a blur, all I can remember was spending every second of the trip either barking instructions at James or stewing on the things I had just uncovered about Jill’s late husband. Everything hadn’t really sunk in yet. I’d replay things over and over again – examining it at different angles, trying to make sense of the knowledge I was given.
There was something that bothered me about the whole thing.
He had done something behind the scenes, covering the truth for his daughter’s sake. He was satisfied in letting her believe that Eric killed himself because he was too weak to accept that he got fired from his job. That was easier for his daughter to bear, he said, than having her face the fact that her husband had been unhappy in their marriage.
That’s what Jack had said about William.
Meanwhile, my own dad had ordered his people to include Eric’s name in the list of terminated employees hours after he killed himself. However you looked at it, my father’s actions were illogical. Well.. not unless he was covering the truth for someone. Something which I believed happened that day. Jack’s words had supplemented this suspicion of mine.
There was a conspiracy to hide the truth. And I think, it was between Melvin Porter and William Grisham.
William wanted to protect his only daughter; my father was more than happy to do his friend a favor. But I’m pretty sure, that if my dad knew that I was going to blame myself for Eric’s death, he wouldn’t have played along.
Thinking about this made me pause and slump against the car seat in utter disbelief and amazement. So that’s why William took the chance and gambled his money on our struggling chain of hotels and resorts when no other company wanted to. My father had been there for him when he was in a bind, and now that we were in need of help, he didn’t hesitate to jump in and lend a helping hand. In a way, I guess he was returning a three year old favor.

Alch, you really are a brilliant writer. The way you flip back and forth, moving from describing Bette’s inner most turmoil to humorous quips between Bette and Tina amazes me. I don’t know about pharmaceuticals, but you sure could have a career in writing! Fabulous updates…it will be a long wait for the next, but well worth it I’m sure.
i get so excited when i see you have posted, i absolutely luv how you write bette/tina, i luv the way you play with their relationship. can’t wait for more!!
Bette has a lot on her plate, she’s doing the right thing, and I have faith that Tina will be more understanding. Cause she’s Tina and she’s put up with so much. Take your time with the posts and thanks for the warning. Thanks Alchy.
Okay, you mentioned youre not gonna be able to update in a few weeks. But we have long weekend in plain sight?! :D Im back to my little cocoon then, loving the sweet talks between Bette and Tina. But seems the drama isnt over yet from your little snippet Alchemy! Thanks for the update
i absolutely love this story!
What a beautiful, heartbreaking, and full of surprise 3 chapters. All the agony that Bette put herself through and finding out that she was not the cause of Eric’s death. I like her idea of taking down the evil couple. Will she hire the ones that lose their jobs by taking down the evil couple, and will she have the ability to rehire those that lost their employment because of her actions of her childhood?
That was awesome!
