Just The Girl 2.0 – Chapter Fifteen (based loosely on HYD: Returns)

“Technically, it wasn’t a lie. You know she calls me dad.” Ken shared, looking all clever and smart. “And I told her to keep it from you cause I know that if you found out about our trip, you’d insist and pressure her to take you along with us.”

“And you didn’t want that?” Tina couldn’t help it by this point and turned her head to look at her father. But the moment he tore his gaze from the road to meet her eyes, she quickly looked away again.

“Nope.” Ken gave a tiny, unapologetic shrug.

“As if I’d want to listen to the two of you talking about me all day..” Tina spat out bitterly, annoyed that she was left out of those trips AND lied to by the two people she loved.

“You think we talk about you all the time?!” Ken looked at his daughter with mock indignation. “I know you’re my daughter and I love you regardless, but just how vain and self-centered are you?” He chuckled playfully.

Annoyed, Tina exhaled loudly through her nose, showing her father just how displeased she was with his joke.

“Hey, don’t get mad. C’mon, those fishing trips were our bonding moments. Bette and I needed our man-to-man talks.” Ken tried to explain but then paused. “I mean, man-to-woman or father-to-daughter-in-law talks..” He corrected himself.

    Daughter-in-law?! “We aren’t even married!”

“Yet.” Ken pointed out. “Besides, Bette told me that she’s planning to–” He stopped mid-sentence and trailed off, his hazel eyes going wide when he began to realize just what he was about to say. Whoops!

    “Planning what?”

“Nothing.” Ken waved a hand dismissively, forcing a nervous chuckle out his throat. “Anyway,” He said quickly before Tina had a chance to question him further. “That’s why I wanted to know why Bette’s not with you today. I specifically told her last week that I wanted to see her because–”

“Something came up.” Tina interjected, but her father just continued talking.

“–because I wanted her to explain to me face to face why she made my daughter cry even though she promised me, man-to-man.. uh.. man-to-woman, that she’d never do such a thing.”

    1. My eyes bulge out of their sockets…WOW…54 pages. Wow, I can only bow in admiration. Thank you. On the story, both are having a hellion on the break time, man I am having a hellion on the break time and not even part of the story. I guess we havnet seen the last of the wannabe musician back. What happens next? ;)

    2. thanks alch…another brilliant update and i actually took a bathroom break just like you said lol. i’m just afraid that since this is a long update it might take you longer to write the next? hope not, looking forward to it.

    3. wow..that was epic! But well worth the read…thank you for that ray of sunlight by way of Bette’s memory…and of course for the multitude of “..” this was a good one..

    4. I did a little happy dance when I saw your post! I have to say the chapters were a little short…LMAO! Such a gut wrenching time for B & T. Beautifully written!

    5. Thank you Alchy for such a wonderful and long read! You did a great job of weaving the scenes together. I love the Tina-Ken teasing, Bette – Sonja “recovery/addiction” moment, 3-step recovery for Tina, Sam/Bette’s conversation and the Tibette car. So very, very, very clever!!!! Ok…I sense that “Keith Arden” is somehow connected to a certain “Kate Arden.” Hm…looks like a black cloud on the Tibette reunion horizon. But…I cling to the hope that Ken’s almost secret sharing of perhaps an engagement is in the future. You know that small ray of hope is what is bringing your readers back!!!!! Get some rest Alchy…get your creative juices a break but come back real soon…we need our Alchy fix!

    6. Your story always satisfies, Alchemy. You get some of everything in here, and it’s all fab. I loved this chapter. Here’s hoping that Tina can stick to #3 on her list, and I hope Bette can do the same. Great, great update, Alchemy. Thank you! :)

    7. Brilliant chapter Alchemy – you always take such care with detail, emotion, characterization – amazing ;-) As someone said abt the previous chapter – one thing Bette still needs to learn is how to take Tina off that pedestal and treat her like an equal. Relationships mean sharing – both good things and bad – IMO that’s the biggest repair they need, the only truly important one. I loved seeing Tina & Ken again – what a great father daughter dynamic they have. I see Tina is still eating her pain, haha! The flashback was great and so was the bittersweet ending.
