Jess — Plan B; pt. 59
“Hey, mom.”
“Jess?”
“I think I’m the only one who calls you mom, mom.”
“I’m just surprised.”
Surprised that your only daughter misses you? “Is it an okay time to call?”
“It’s always an okay time.”
Lines like that sound corny, but when my mom says ‘em, I believe ‘em completely.
“Where are you?”
Geez, I forgot about the noise around here. “Uh,
“Jess.”
Okay, maybe I’m busted. But is it my fault that Porter dragged me out here. “It wasn’t my idea.”
“Jess.”
“Really, it was Bette’s.” Right about now, I’m not going down for one of Porter’s mistakes.
“I’m still disappointed.”
“I know, but we were supposed to look at her creepy buildings, but instead she decided to tell me stuff.”
“You’re supposed to be in school.” Ouch! Mom got me with that one. “What stuff? And if you’re in
I took a quick scan over my shoulder. “She’s walking about 10 paces behind me.”
“Jess.”
“Mom, she was telling me about how she split out on us before. And, I don’t know. Why’s she back here?”
“She didn’t split out on us, Jess.” I could hear the effort mom was putting into her speech, trying to control her words.
“That’s what she said, mom.” I stopped for a moment, anticipating mom’s next words.
“Let me talk to Bette.”
I held out the phone and she came over and took it from me.
“Hi, T.”
Of course she knew who I’d be calling, even if she didn’t hear. She didn’t make any efforts to lead the discussion, I noticed.
“She wanted to know.”
Sure, Porter, make this all my fault.
This was followed by a bunch of agreeing, yes-ing, and Porter basically taking whatever mom was tossing at her. Even though I’m not in the greatest of moods, it was a little funny.
From the look on Porter’s face, mom was none too pleased. Anyway, after she was done being on the receiving end of what could well have developed into a full-blown momzilla attack, she handed the phone back. “You, again.”
“Jess?”
“Yeah, mom.”
“I’ll be home tomorrow night.”
“I know, mom.”
“We’ll talk then.”
“Who’s we?” Okay, so maybe it was catty to say that where Porter could hear me, but I’m okay with it.
“Whoever you want, Jess. Just me, or Bette and me.”
Wow. Maybe she’s not a total momzilla about this after all.
“I miss you, mommy.”
“I miss you too, sweetie.” The voice she used was exactly the same one she used when I was a little girl, and she’d be working late, and I’d be staying with Aunt Alice or Aunt Shane. Mom would call me every night before I went to bed, and tell me how much she missed me. “I love you very much.” She’d tell me that, too.
“Same here, mom.”
Neither of us wanted to say good-bye. I turned away from Porter. Not that she was unaccustomed to crying – she’d been doing it enough. But that didn’t mean she needed to see me doing it.
“Bye,” I finally whispered, and clicked off the phone. If mom had anything else, she’d call back.
That left me and Porter.
And it left me really wanting a hug.
Mom’s not here. Could Porter actually be the hugging type?
I looked at her, and I walked a little closer. And she just stood there.
With that, I turned and walked to the car.
I do miss my mom.

Keep it coming, pseud. Love this story.
awww – that was soo sweet. So well done.
I hope the three of them can find their way back to each other.Great story all the way,
aw, bette. you shoulda hugged her, you dolt. how come she never does what i want her to do?
great chapter.
Hey that was so Great Thanks pseud I’m still Love it Please continue.
Jess is right, Bette is afraid of Tina. Can’t wait to hear what Tina was saying to her.
Hmmm, will Jess choose to talk to just Tina or all of them together? If she talks to just Tina she can try to catch Bette in an untruth if she wants to be ruthless. If she wants to play nicely, she can corroborate Bette’s side of events. If they all three talk together, well that could either bring them all together or get them all riled up. But they all need to talk at some point. There is still some resentment on both their parts, I imagine. Not to mention, that if forgiveness is given – Jess needs to hear it as well so they can start to build a foundation to move forward in their new relationships together.
Bon bons be damned…wipe the chocolate from your fingers and post soon!! (please)
love this story ill say right off. but after what flair did to us today, im in no mood for all of them not to be a family. this was great again. do it again.
That was great. Short, but sweet. And extremely well-written.
And, you’ve finally come to terms with the laws of supply and demand and knocked it off with the (tbc?) nonsense.
Just keep loving it. We can all relate to being busy, but if you get the chance another posting would be so wonderful. Nice touch, what’s with Porter, where was the hug.
Ah, I just thinks she’s as scared as Jess.
thanks for two awesome chapters today. i’m intrigued by what tina’s new pov will be. i can’t wait for you to be done with your next round of soaps and bon bons!
oh man, Bette missed her opportunity! I hope she doesn’t miss the next – if there is one.
Oh dear! Bette has missed the window of opportunity..i hope she gets a second chance to redeem herself.
Thanks for the chapters P.
Oh poor Bette!
Bette really missed out…on this kind of intimacy with her daughter. It’s really her great loss.
Thanks.
You have a very nice way with portraying dialog. Keep it coming.
sometimes a girl just needs her mother. very touching story pseud. i love it.
Come on Bette, give Jess a hug!
*sniff, sniff* I miss my mom! Kids don’t like to admit that, but you made it so natural for Jess. I wish Bette didn’t “think” too much and just feel, then she would know to hug Jess.
But I’m sure Bette will get there…soon?
Thanks so much for posting two, count them, two!
i could understand why bette would hesitate. and i remember in one of your previous chapters of bette’s pov where she wanted to hug jess but was scared of rejection. bette has left everything up to jess though however slow her acceptance of bette maybe. considering the turn of events i could see why bette wont just reach out and hug jess. great chapter. i also like that you are posting everyday :)
That was great, but how the hell is Bette suposed to know the kid wants a hug when shes mean all the damn time and attacked her. WTF….this is a great story, but I must admit I do get a lil frustrated with it.
Poor Bette…that window of opportunity closed so quickly. Now I think I need a hug.
Thank God You are back. I haven’t checked in much since you took your bon bon small animal holiday, and I check this morning and you have all these post and I’m in heaven. You rock. I love your story. You have created an absolutely wonderful character with Jess. Thanks again for your story. My life is pretty shitty right now and your story gives me a nice boost.
i cant blame Bette she dosent know how to react to Jess and if she try to hug her and Jess push her away?..its a very delicate moment for her..great chapter please let them be together they d lost so much time already..thanks
I can completely understand why Bette wouldn’t hug Jess in this situation…she’s spent the last few days dodging dirty glares and now has someone who wants a hug and the window of opportunity closed before she could process it. They’re both thinking rejection is in store, so neither would make the bold step. Short but sweet P. Thanks again.
WTF Porter wake your ass of and hug your kid, maybe when they get home they can cuddle together lol
maybe Bette just didn’t recognize Jess’ ‘I need a hug now’ look. And I’m sure she knew she was stepping on eggshells as it was and didn’t want to make a wrong move.
it’s nice to see that Tina wanted to at least include Bette in the ‘family’ discussion. I hope she’s not too angry that Bette told Jess her side of things, especially when she took the blame for everything that happened.
and ooh again with the creepy buildings…I think Bette should just fess up about that
Great job, can’t wait to see what happens
