It Takes A Village: Surprise
Helena wasn’t sure if the man behind the counter knew that he was selling something that would be eventually priceless. She examined the stones on the necklace—diamonds for sure. She paid the man graciously, placing the necklace in her bag and walking over to Bette. She wrapped her arms around her little waist and ran her nose against the lovely set of curls.
“You find something you like, darling?”
“Yes. I really like this photograph.” She nodded her head to the photo in front of her. It was a black and white picture of a two little boys. Their clothes were all dusty and their hair was disheveled. They had one arm each wrapped around each others shoulders. In one boy’s arms was a soccer ball, “The look in their eyes, Helena. It’s astounding.”
“Yes, it is. They look so joyful, and so very happy just to be. You know? Just to be.”
“They make me long for the son Tina and I lost.” Bette said, in a soft and somber voice.
“You and Tina lost a son?” Helena asked.
“Yes. I’m surprised Tina didn’t say anything.” Helena held Bette tighter, feeling her body tremble slightly, “We never even got to name him. I never got to say goodbye.”
“What do you mean?”
“Tina was alone when she found out that the baby had stopped thriving. I got held up at work thanks to that bitch Faye Buckley.”
“I heard about that. I’m so sorry Bette. If there were a way I could make that pain go away, I would try so hard, Bette. God, I swear I would.”
“I know.” Bette turned around to Helena, pressing her forehead against hers. Helena reached up and wiped the tears away from Bette’s eyes, “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. We can’t expect to be stoic people all the time, especially when our hearts have a gaping hole in it that can never be fully repaired.” She kissed Bette’s forehead, “You and Tina are strong women. I could never imagine losing Wilson or Jun Ying for good and still being able to wake up in the morning.” Lightening the mood, Helena continued, “So, this is the one you like, yeah?”

I loved the “basket fingers” detail. The fact that Bette is able to show vulnerability in Helena’s presence is just one of the reasons why Helena’s membership in Bette’s exclusive basket-fingers club is so richly deserved. And another great cliffhanger with the shit about to hit the fan in Papi-land.
What Rufus said! This is what I love about Bette and Helena, that Bette is able to be herself, and feel what she feels, and Helena is there to care and ssupport her. Bette doesn’t have to be perfect and the eternal provider and the caretaker and everything else that she had to be for Tina. I love that Bette feels her heart and soul can rest in Helena’s hands. I have a feeling she is going to like the necklace ALOT, and that Helena is going to like how Bette likes it!!! POST SOON PLEASE!
Nice update. Can’t wait until Papi and Carmen come face to face.
Hey ash, glad to see you back again!! This chapter was really sweet between B and H…I love the basket fingers, that was really cute and the whole necklace ordeal at the end. So CUTE! I can’t wait to see what happens with Carmen and Papi see each other once again. Can’t wait and PPS.
ASh I really enjoyed this chapter,, Megan will soon find out that Papi and Carmen have a past together, how willshe take it? And Bette and Helena, loved how Bette was able to tell Helena about the child she lost with Tina and be able to cry. Loved how she was more than inspired with the b&W photo of the two boys. And last, Helena surprising Bette w/the diamond necklace, loved it ASH!!
