Is it finally the end of the road?

“Well thank you, I enjoy working with you too.”

Tina was on top of the comforter, leaning up against the headboard, talking on the phone with one hand, and playing with Angelica with the other.

Letting a low chuckle escape her lips, she seductively whispered into the phone. “Now come on…how many times do I need to tell you…you’re not bothering me. I really like talking with you about these…uh, scripts. Right…scripts….I knew we were talking about something important like that.” Staring at herself in the mirror that was hanging directly across from her, she watched as her cheeks turned pink…feeling a sense of glee that she hadn’t felt for a really long time.

“Hmmm…a problem you say? With one of the scripts? Well, it sounds to me like we need to meet for coffee first thing in the morning….to go over those pesky scripts that is.” More giggling.

Unfortunately, while Tina was busy feeling gleeful, and flirting with the very handsome man who was flirting back at her on the other end of the phone line, she didn’t hear that Bette had come home, nor did she realize that Bette was now standing in the doorway of the bedroom, leaning against the jam.

“So…does 8:00am sound good to you?” Still not noticing her partner, Tina tickled her daughter’s tummy, while trying not to giggle out loud again.

“I wish it could be earlier, but I can’t get away before that.”

“Ok…see you then…and…well…” She lowered her voice, letting out a husky whisper. “I just wanted to say…I can’t wait….bye.” She flipped her phone closed, and bent down closer to her gurgling baby. Then, talking in baby talk, she tickled Angelica again. “Guess what baby, your mommy has a date tomorrow with a VERY handsome man!” Picking her up off the bed, Tina lifted her up above her head, and repeated. “That’s right baby…a very handsome….”

Before Tina could finish the last word, she saw a slight movement out of the corner of her eye. Turning her head, and lowering Angelica at the same time, she immediately felt her stomach tighten, and her breath catch in her throat.

He eyes locked with Bette’s, neither woman saying anything. Finally Bette lifted her eyebrows, and said. “You want to tell me what I just walked in on?”

    1. This was is so well written, Seahurst. As I watched Bette tell Tina that she’d miss her twice, only to get no response, all I could think of were the lyrics from Jamiroquai’s (my all time favourite group) Picture of My Life: “This can never really end, it’s infinitely sad. Can someone tell me when something good became so bad. So if you have a cure, to me would you please send a picture of my life with a letter telling how it should really be instead.

    2. Hey Sea,Once again, a very well written story….of what might be the true direction of the show. I too, think Bette deserves better than Tina. The indifference T is showing toward Bette is to hard to watch. I would like to see Helena be a part of Bette’s life in some fashion….even if it only to become very close friends. Is there any hope you will continue with this story? I sincerely hope so. Your adoring fan….

    3. Truly a heartbreaking story. I live in a country where S3 might not air and from all the stories written, I´m not sure I´d want to watch anyway. From my point of view IC has killed TLW and prevented S4 from becomming a reality. Your story is as always great and in some ways katharsic.

    4. okay – i’m gonna come out and say it – i love B/T and i’m NOT going to watch season three. don’t care when it airs in UK but i cannot watch another season of bette looking like a wounded puppy – I AM NOT WATCHING SEASON THREE

    5. Wonderful as usual. But one thing I don’t get from last weeks episode–Tina is constantly ranting (someone needs to slap her) about Bette making money–ARE YOU GETTING PAID FOR THAT?!?! So when Bette needs to go to Washington, she says to Bette, “I thought we agreed that you would stay home with Angelica. So which is it Tina? You can’t have both.

    6. I tell myself it is a tv show…but it just doesn’t work. That just about made me cry. Just when I think I might be coming to terms with the breakup…I realized that I am not. Thank you for that beautifully written story.

    7. I tell myself it is a tv show…but it just doesn’t work. That just about made me cry. Just when I think I might be coming to terms with the breakup…I realized that I am not. Thank you for that beautifully written story.

    8. I tell myself it is a tv show…but it just doesn’t work. That just about made me cry. Just when I think I might be coming to terms with the breakup…I realized that I am not. Thank you for that beautifully written story.

    9. Amazing story and sadly very feasable. Even though I think IC will have them come together in the very end ala last season I almost think this is the more realistic option considering the situation she has put Bette and Tina in.

    10. I agree that sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Most of the time you won’t have the luxury of waiting for the perfect job. Bette needs to be strong again even if it means taking a desk job.

    11. Sea that was beautifully painful. I have read many spoliers today that have my heart broken. I applaud the writers who can take Season 3 and use it to help them deal. I am not sure I can continue to write my own when i feel like this.

    12. Seahurst,You are an incredible writer. I am afraid after reading TWoP and spoilers this is how our LW will end. Do you believe the spoilers or will IC pull a rabbit out of the hat and save B & T? What do you think? What about the readers?

    13. Sea,I feel your pain. I have experienced a girlfriend leaving me for a man and it absolutely sucks. Every week that I watch season 3 I get a stomach ache and it brings up all those things again. If IC chooses to break them up and Tina goes to men, then we might as well all go back in the closet cuz that’s just what the homophobes want. IT is such a crucial atmosphere here in the U.S. and she is about to push us how many steps back? To the closet we go…damnit stop the madness!!!

    14. Could somebody please tell me who the happy couple is on The L Word? Is there even ONE happy couple????…and it is produced by a lesbian…go figure that.

    15. i think ic has foot up her b—t–at least i didn’t cry this time seems shes destine to make a mocker out of commintment of two loving people–did tina only want to cime at the ebd s2 because she didn’t want to be alone and broke(not taken care of) did she have these feelings back then–have to watvch to see how far from the true b & t they can go==you write with so much emotion we feel it–good for bette

    16. Sea my girl…you are killing me but so true to feelings of what has transpired already. You do write beautifully and as I always tell you I love anything you write. You are an inspiration, thank you. GO STEELERS !!! I can’t afford to lose our wager.

    17. Oh boy, this is awful!! Not the writing- the writing is just simply delightful, but the situation… geez!! I can only imagine what’s making you write this and it sucks. Please don’t give up on them!!

    18. I love the way you write so I couldn’t help reading this despite the warning of spoilers. I’m from the UK so haven’t seen any of Season 3 but I’m addicted to this site so keep stumbling on references to it. I’m a big B&T fan and it breaks my heart that this is happening! I really don’t know how you wrote this. V good but just plain wrong.

    19. This story (stand alone chapter) is beautifully written. I have not seen season 3, but from reading on this site I can see that my heart will be breaking when I do see it. I only hope that these two can find that road back to where their heart truly is (with their partner). I always seem to be drawn to straight women. I guess I do that to be what I think is safe. I seem to always be on the outside looking in. (I seem to be in the closest in the basement, and we do not even have basements in Florida). Keep bringing us the inside workings of our girls.

    20. Breaking my B&T heart. In Britain so havn’t seen any of S3 yet, but if this is any indication of future episodes, I will be gutted. Still beautifully written, felt Bette’s emotion thru u’re words. Thanks

    21. Beautifully and painfully written. And it’s great when fanfic writers tackle the worst scenarios – I trust you with these characers more than TPTB. Do it fast, do it well and do it first. You give Tina a fairer deal than I bet she’s gonna get from IC. At least she’s being honest. The writing for B&T is chiselled on the wall, though I suspect that this outcome was planned from the very start of the show. All the issues around B&T’s sex life were signposted in the pilot. And it chimes with IC’s guiding principle of sexuality being fluid. “… some girls are gay until they’re not…”

    22. Sea, I think maybe we all needed that closure, so to speak. My heart has been shattered so many times these couple of weeks, I just don’t have the strength anymore to keep hoping against hope. I see Bette on screen and then feel like I need to lie down on some shrink’s couch. And this is television!! IC has wrecked havoc, dug her own grave as far as I’m concerned. I’m a die hard Bette supporter, and I applaud Ms Beals for her portrayal, and I suppose since so many of us are completely devastated, she has done her job splendidly. It’s just so so sad that this show that we so love has storylines that regressed to such a sorry state. ENough ranting, thanks for this Sea.I still look forward to reading your stories….the sea shell one…though you may be totally uninspired right now, I know you have it in you to spin your tale beautifully when the time comes, and I shall be looking forward to it. Take care.

    23. Oh my God this was right on the money. I love how it is the story we are given now but with more love and compassion then what we seem to be getting on the screen. Thanks Seahurst as always your writing inspires.

    24. Hey Sea, thank you for getting us prepared for this next series of events. I appreciate you processing where each of them are with their relationship. This whole scenario has the makings of crushing an already broken woman. I am glad we see her in the posture of rising from the ashes. Oh, the Citibank job makes more sense. Initially, I was thinking they were offering her some number crunching desk job that would suck the life out of her. But, acquistions…this is great. I believe she still would be able to bring her passion and knowledge of art into this position. The opportunities could be boundless. There is nothing like watching a gifted, passionate person die a slow death from a mundane job.

    25. I think you are absolutely correct. How this relationship on the tv show can go anywhere else is impossible to believe. I do hope the Bette on the show can regain her spine, but IC seems to like to humiliate her. Why? Well, that’s another story. On this site we can have the romantic B&T, but I think only here. I’ve been sitting on a Shoulda story for several days and this makes it easier to post. BTW – I loved this: “…Bette was somewhat surprised to realize that it was only the first day of their new arrangement. It aready felt like they had been living this way for a year.” When something crushing happens, that’s exactly how it feels.

    26. When did I become Anonymous? This fucking server! Man, what it’s doing to my self esteem. Do I have to move out now like Bette? I thought I was funnyone. There! I won’t settle for crumbs, either.

    27. DAMN STR8!! I AGREE WITH BETTE 100%. IF TINA DOES GO WITH A MAN, THAT’S IT FOR T & B!!!!!! TIME FOR BETTE TO BE FINALLY HAPPY, AND TO BE RELEASED OF ALL THESE POO SANDWICHES SHE’S BENG SERVED!!!!!!!!

    28. I should have avoided this story but I’m a glutton for punishment. I like the realistic approach you took with this. This show has fucked with my head so much, I’ll probably have to add this to my weekly therapy sessions. It’s shit like this that makes me afraid to try a relationship ever again.

    29. Wow, that was sad. You write so beautifully. I know you said no follow up but can you atleast give another chapter where Bette leaves the house with her head held high and tell to Tina to fuck off!!!(Sorry I am just in angry mood)

    30. Seahurst,That was excruciatingly painful; all the more for your exquisite and eloquent authoring. The natural and brutal honesty made my heart ache and my eyes water. This is a beautifully crafted tragedy full of if only’s. If only Tina ha been truthful earlier when these feelings started; If only Bette have turned to Tina and not Candace; If only they could find a bridge to traverse the distance between them and so on… As far as the season goes I can only hope that this is moment of madness and that my letting Tina go, Tina will come back to where she belongs, with Bette and Angelica. Thank you for this touching and tender trauma. Your Loyal Fan.

    31. Thanks Seahurst…I always enjoy your stories. There’s only so much a relationship can take, even if true love is, or has been, part of the equation. Time to end the slow bleed with a knife to the heart. Then everyone can move on, as they were meant to.

    32. *sigh* I think this is all I have been doing the last few weeks both with the show and fanfic. I can feel the pain everywhere I was actually contemplating stopping with everything that is the L Word. I think IC had this planned from the beginning so much has become clear. But as always Seahurst you handled it with a tact IC can only dream of. Thanks

    33. I’m tempted to say “Et Tu, Seahurst?” because this is painful. I understand why you wrote it. It is well written and very true to their characters, but damn, you know? Thanks Sea, if you need me I’ll be on Planet Denial.

    34. sea – thank you verymuch for your beautiful writing as usual. And for your giving Bette a sense of dignity and power as she met with this painful situation. The show is so disheartening – it is not what fans want or need – your story and others are more of a reflection of the emotional reality of lesbian lives – Im hating me some IC and her lame dramatic twists and turns. Thanks for continuing to write.

    35. Yes, it is finally the end of the road. Sea, can you have Helena from ‘Wanted’ come & swoop Bette up & save the day? Um…we’re practicing manifestation techniques in my Visualization class & I just thought I’d ask. LOL!! This was exceptionally plausible. Loved the dialog when Tina was on the phone with Mr. Penis. It was so…her.
