“It is I, your cheerful courier.”
Bette looked up from her desk to see Alice entering her office. She took the envelope that Alice passed to her, opening it up and pulling out the proofs.
“Thanks, Alice.” Al took a seat in the visitor chair. “Nice of you to run this extra errand for me.”
“You’re welcome,” Alice continued, changing up her voice to sound like a second person. “I never mind favors when…”
“Fuck!”
The invective broke up the monologue.
“Not now, thanks.” Alice interjected.
“One simple card, and they can’t handle basic English grammar,” Bette continued, having a monologue of her own. She picked up the phone, mashing the buttons for the printer’s number. “Get me Franco. I don’t care if he’s with a customer. I’m a customer.”
This was followed by milliseconds of silence. “Right. Have him call Bette Porter at the Porter Gallery within the next three minutes if he expects to keep my business.” With that, she slammed down the phone, not waiting for a confirmation.
“Fuckers.”
“Would you, uh, like to get some dinner or something?”
“Does it look like I’m able to go for dinner, Al?”
“I don’t know. I thought you might like something to get rid of the taste of the shit sandwich that you obviously had for lunch.”
“I didn’t have lunch.”
“Bette.”
“Alice. Thank you. Yes, I’m a bitch on wheels. Since I arrived today, I’ve been subjected to idiots at every turn.”
“But at least you got laid this weekend.”
“You’re way off limits.”
“I thought I could get you at a weak point.”
Bette slumped back for a moment in her chair.
“Can’t blame me for trying,” Alice continued.
At that point, the tone sounded that indicated that someone had entered the gallery.
“This is all I need.” Bette groaned.
“Clients? Since when are clients a bad thing?”
“They’re inopportune.”
Tina popped her head into the doorway of the office. “Hey there.”
Alice watched as Bette’s demeanor instantly lightened, her smile coming to the fore.
“Hey yourself,” the tall woman responded.
Alice launched into a new monologue. “Hi, Tina, I’m fine thanks.”

Wheeeww, Bette is showing her jealous streak. Maybe Bette did not know she has a jealous streak but it has now shown up when it comes to Tina Kennard.

Well after this brief moment that probably at first glance for B looked like she was trying to put the moves on T, I hope Al has the good sense to remember her line, “…two’s company, three’s not allowed.” Still interested and hoping you can PPS!!! :-)

Hey Pseud, Great new chapter. I love how Bette was a real grouch with Alice and the printer and then smilled when Tina entered the room. Tina just lights up Bette’s world and mood. Good to have Tina and ALice sorting things out. They both want what is best for Bette. Just hope Bette gives them time to expalin their hug before exploding. You really do make me laugh out loud.
