Incandescent glow: Chapter 8, The Princess and the Painting

“The second task I have for you might be a bit more complicated,” she began, not sure where to begin.  “I recently met a young lady, who suddenly came into her powers…she is definitely of sidhe heritage…”

All three of her guests leaned forward as she told them of her encounters with Shane, clearly intrigued.

“What I would like for you to do, is find out who her father is,” she stated.  “All I have from her is that he went by the name of Ash.”

They continued to discuss Shane and her newfound powers, knowing that they could get some insight into her father’s identity through them.  As the princess and her men left, Maeve sighed in relief.  It was a burden she was more than willing to pass on to professional private detectives.

    That night, at Milk

Shane walked into Milk, with Jenny close upon her heels.  As they walked through the crowd, Jenny’s eyes darted about, noticing the number of women whose eyes were fixed on Shane.  Moving closer to her friend, she wondered if these people were former lovers or just prospective new ones.

As Shane leaned against the bar, ordering a couple of beers, Jenny leaned in to ask her, “Did you notice the number of women staring at you when you came in?”

Shane just looked at her and smiled lopsidedly while she shrugged.  “I didn’t really notice.”

“I’d be kind of…weirded out if people stared at me like that all the time,” Jenny added, timidly.

“Look.  They’re just people, like you and me.  Nothing to be freaked out about,” she added reassuringly.  Just then, she noticed Carmen on the far side of the bar, she smiled at her, but then remembered Maeve’s warnings, so she quickly glanced around until she saw a random girl that she’d had a good time with a couple of months ago.  The girl was staring at her, so she immediately approached when she caught Shane’s gaze.

Carmen had made her way across the room to talk to her.  Shane introduced her to Jenny, and tried not to notice the hurt and confused expression on Carmen’s face as she left her with Jenny, to go home with the random girl.

“You guys have fun.  I’ll see you at home Jen.  Later Carmen,” she said in parting.
