    I’m In Love With a Stripper – Chapters 26-27

Tina relaxes even more into the tub.
“Hey you’ve got to stay sitting up.” Bette chuckles at Tina’s response to getting her hair shampooed.
“Sorry.  It‘s just so relaxing.  I remember when I was a kid how much I loved for my mother to shampoo my hair.”
“Oh yeah?  That is one of the few things that I remember about my mother.  That and her smile.”
“Was she as beautiful as you are?” Tina says and looks up towards Bette.
“Well actually I look just like her except my skin tone and hair. I’m of mixed heritage so I’m rather fair for a black woman.”
“Really you’re black?” Tina says as she turns her head  back towards the tub.
“Yes technically, since the day I was born.”  Bette chuckles. “My mother was Irish American and my dad African American.”
Tina sits quietly in the tub as Bette continues to wash her hair.
    “Tina?”
    “Yes.”
    “You got rather quiet.”
    “I’m just thinking.”
    “About what?”
    “About what you just said.”
“Is my being black a problem?”
“No, not at all.” says Tina as she turned to face Bette. “I really didn’t even think about your race really.  I wasn’t sure and it really doesn’t matter. I just think that you are beautiful.”
    “So why so much thought?”
“Well I was thinking about my grandmother.”
“The one who gave you Sam?”
“Yeah, my dad’s mom.  I would hear her say all sorts of negative things about people of other races and lifestyles while I was growing up.”
    “And?”
Turning towards Bette again. “And I’m just glad that I won’t have to deal with her over us dating.  I think my mom is going to be hard enough but my grandmother would have made the situation impossible.”
    “How so?”
“Well, my first real boyfriend Donald in high school was a black guy and my grandmother ran him off.”
    “Why what did she do?”
“We’re from a small town and my grandmother was quite influential.  She made him lose his part time job. Belittled him every chance she got and even put some boys up to beating him up.  I tried to see him without her knowing but for his safety I quit seeing him.”  Tina turn back around and Bette continues to wash her hair.
