If it makes you happy – Chapter 8

Exhausted after a long day, Bette contemplated her options. She desperately wanted to spend some time with her daughter and then have an early night. However, a guilty conscience told her this was no time for self indulgence. Abby was hurting, of this much Bette was convinced, and she knew she had to make amends.

Picking herself up off the couch, Bette ambled down the hallway and leaned against the bathroom doorjamb. Tina had her back to the door as she concurrently bathed and entertained their daughter. Angelica let out a squeal of delight as Tina tipped warm water over her head and carefully washed out the baby shampoo. The simple scene tugged at Bette’s heart strings.

“Looks like you two are having way too much fun in here.” She remarked.

Tina turned around and smiled. “She’s a real water baby our girl.” She said proudly before turning back to lift her thoroughly washed daughter out of the bath.

“You were right.” Bette admitted as she reached for Angelica’s towel and handed it to Tina, “I owe Abby an apology. I shouldn’t have allowed her to be put in the position she was this afternoon. So I’m going to head over to her place to try and straighten this all out.”

Tina nodded as she dried Angelica’s small frame with the large towel before wrapping her infant daughter in it. “Sounds like the right thing to do.” Tina encouraged with a quick smile.

“Yeah” Bette replied but she couldn’t shake the fact that it felt all wrong.

“Are you OK?” Tina asked having just seen the perplexed expression on Bette’s face.

“In truth, I’d prefer to stay here with the two of you.” Bette admitted before adding “It’s been a really long day and the last thing I want to do is head out again.”

    “Right” Tina replied.

“It just…feels strange to be going out when you and Angelica are here. The house feels full again.”

“I guess that’s bound to happen when you increase the population by 200%” Tina replied.

“I’ve been rattling around in here on my own for so long, I’d forgotten what it was like to not be alone.”

“Abby doesn’t ever stay with you?” Tina ventured, a little surprised at what Bette was alluding to.

“No, she’s never stayed here.” Bette replied, “I always stay at her place.”

Tina nodded in understanding as she tried to guess at Bette’s reasoning for keeping her new lover out of their home.

Bette offered no explanation. Instead she busied herself by picking up and folding her daughter’s tiny clothes.

There was one question that burned inside of Tina, will you be staying at her place tonight? Though she was loathed to admit it, she felt jealous at the thought of Bette spending the night with Abby. After all this time it wasn’t a reaction she had anticipated. After all this time she thought it wouldn’t affect her. She dared herself ask the question but quickly realized she didn’t have the courage. After all that had happened between them Tina no longer felt she had the privilege of asking her ex-wife about such things. Instead she would have to wait and see what eventuated.

“I’d better get moving. The longer I leave this the harder it’s going to be.” Bette said reluctantly.

“Please let Abby know that I wasn’t trying to make her uncomfortable in any way. I’d hate her to think that I was trying to come between the two of you, or anything.” Tina said, it was true to some extent. She wanted to mean it, she didn’t want to be battling this sudden bout of jealousy.

“I’ll let her know.” Bette replied with a small smile.

    “Good luck.” Tina said.

“I’m sure it’ll be fine. Abby’s very level headed. But thanks.” Bette replied as she stepped in and kissed Angelica’s cheek softly before telling her daughter to be good for her mama.

The two women shared an awkward moment as they said goodbye, neither one of them comfortable with the idea of Bette leaving her home or her family.

    1. Hear Hear Techgal! Nicely said. And a wonderful comparison you made between fanfaicchick and Hackgirl. I love both writers’ conception and depiction of B&T. It is amazing that so many writers have taken the same two characters and yet interpreted them in such different ways, without losing the initial identity. Kinda like a jazz riff. Hackgirl, I love your flawed but adult and largely balanced characters. Abby is a perfect example. I also love the quiet anguish in the B&T relationship that you depict so well, both here and in your earlier fics. I have to say that it took me a little while to get into this story of yours, but with this chapter I am fully and deeply in. I am going back to re-read all prior chapters. (I just re-read all of fanficchick’s work last week. What a pleasure. Next week it is Hackgirl.) Thanks HG.

    2. How difficult for Tina to encourage Bette to resolve things with Abby. After reading this story, it’s so obvious that the two of them have more than just the connection of Angelica. Bette just needs to communicate with Tina and hopefully they could resolve their problems. Then they can focus on each other and their family. Thanks for post. I look forward to next chapter.

    3. Bette, go to Abby, make her feel better about herself–the whole ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ speech works pretty well. And then get your butt back home and start rebuilding your family. Great chapter, thanks for posting.

    4. Interesting how you’ve shown us that Bette still needs a nudge before she can see things from someone else’s perspective. No wonder commmunication has never been her strong suit! Thanks for writing it.

    5. Watch Abby has a random person over for the night, and people sometime’s call this random person Lament…Oh sorry I drifted off to Lala Land for a second. ;)

    6. Memo to Tina: You snooze, you lose! Just tell Bette that since you left her your life has been an abyss of nothingness in a sea despair…or something like that. As for Abby, if she hasn’t done so yet, now would be a good time for her to lock her heart up. Awesome chapter, as always, HackGirl. Please post soon.

    7. talk to abby, say farewell and come home to your family, bette…sounds like she’s not planning on moving on with abby anyway if she has all the doubts

    8. Bette oh Bette how could you not tell Abbey about Tina and Angelica moving in with you but on the other hand wasn’t Bette going to ask Tina out for dinner on the Wednesday because Abbey would be in San Francisco, could it be that Abbey is jealous..and now we have Tina being jealous which lady is going to win the heart of one Ms Bette Porter…nice to see a chapter from you HG. Thank you.

    9. Excellent chapter. Don’t have Bette stay at Abby’s b/c she feels guilty for her omission of Tina & Angelica staying at Bette’s. It’s no fun to be playing second fiddle.

    10. Thanks for posting again so quickly. I’m really getting into this story now that you’re around a little more regularly. Good pace to it – I feel for anyone whose partner is a bad communicator, so I can’t help feeling for Abby in this circumstance. Looking forward to more when you have the time…

    11. Hey Hg, That was terrific and torturous as both Bette and Tina internally admitted that there were still feeling between them; feelings that cuold instantly resurface and drive them towards each other. These souls are magnets that are naturally drawn together. I really appreciated Bette’s sense of duty and loyalty as she heads off to tal things through with Abby. It looks like you have an intriguing mange-a trois here. All dicent humans who do not like hurting another however it will be necessary as to your own heat you must be true and Bette’s family is simply put; Tina and Angelica. Wonderfully written and creatively crafted. More please. Thank you so much for this emotional vent. Your Loyal Fan.

    12. Your fic is delicious, in the vein of Fanficchick: spare, with a fresh take on B&T, presenting their characters in new situations. I can never tell what will happen next, and that’s makes for good reading! I really like this story and hope you’ll post again soon! Thank you!

    13. A GENERAL COMMENT: I just wanted to say, god bless all you fanfic writers. You continue to entertain us, day after day. Your writing is a great source of enjoyment for me. I really appreciate your willingness to contribute your efforts to making the l-word.com the best of the L-Word related sites on the internet. There is no fanfic archive like this archive. I am in heaven here, because of you. Hackgirl, thanks for allowing me the space in your comments.
