I Will Follow You Into The Dark – Chapter Two

Fiona slowly leads Bette away from the dancefloor. She is clearly stoned and Bette also has had a few drinks to much. They leave the party in Fiona’s car. Bette has no idea where they are going. Then Fiona stops the car near the ocean, where they have a wonderful view. Fiona leans over to Bette and kisses her passionately. Bette cannot resist and lets Fiona do whatever she is up to.

Bette wakes up in a place she doesn’t know. She looks around and hears the streaming of water behind a door. She goes towards the door, too curious to think of things as politness, and opens it. Fiona is under the shower, bare naked and fucking gorgeous.
“Good morning, beautiful,” Fiona smiles. Then Bette remembers everything. She had the most amazing sex ever. Her cellphone rings and she picks up, still a bit dazzled.

“Where are you? What was that about? Where have you been?” Billy’s voice screams. Bette just hangs up without a word.
“I have to go,” she says slowly.
Fiona looks up. “Okay. See you around. By the way, Bette, I gotta say you were pretty wild.”

This embarasses Bette and she replies in anger: “Fuck off! I didn’t want this to happen, it’s a mistake!”
    “You thought differently last night.”
“Last night is history. I do not want to talk about it, ever again. In fact, I don’t think I ever want to see you again!”
“Whatever you say. You’ll change your mind, you know. Call me when you did.”
    “Don’t wait for it.”
    “Who said I would?”

Bette leaves the house. She isn’t confronted with any family members and is happy about that. The last words of Fiona keep going through her head as she is going home, why do they hurt her? It was her who ran away. She already regretted that. Then Billy came to her mind. What about him? She could hardly tell him to go fuck himself.
When she’s home, she goes straight to her room, takes her cellphone and dials Fiona’s number. Time to set her pride aside.
    “I’m sorry, Fiona.”
    “Told you so.
“I guess. I think I like you, Fiona. A lot, that is.”
“I like you too, Bette. See you Monday.”
    “Yeah.”
Fiona hangs up. Bette doesn’t know how to feel. She knows how she feels about Fiona, but what about the rest of her life? Why is everything so complicated?

The talk to Kit had strangely relieved Bette. Kit had no idea how her life had been like lately, but yet she seemed to understand her perfectly. Bette guessed Kit was stoned anyway.
“You know,” Bette said, standing up. “I think I’m going to school anyway.”
    “Why torture yourself?”
“I don’t want to run away from her.”
“There will be no need to,” Kit smirked. “She left town, remember.”
“Yeah, it’s not what I mean. I just, kinda, need to go, you know. Don’t want people to get ideas.”
“Right.” Kit stood up and patted Bette on the shoulder. “Have fun.”

Bette was being bored in History, which she liked to refer to as Herstory (not that anyone ever got the joke), when she heard a knock on the door.
“Come in,” Mr. Whitman said. The door opened rather slowly and this very shy, blonde girl stepped in. She looked around, seemingly desperate to find an empty sit and sit down as soon as possible. She obviously didn’t like all the attention going to her. The only free seat was next to Bette. It used to be Fiona’s seat, but she’s gone now. The girl noticed the empty space and went over there quickly.

“Maybe you can introduce yourself?” Mr. Whitman asked friendly. The blonde started blusing heavily.
“Tina,” she said, almost in a whisper. “Tina Kennard.”
    “Where are you from?”
    “Chicago.”
Apparently Mr. Whitman noticed that Tina was not much of a talker and he went on.
“Well, I don’t know if you have a book yet?”
“No. They are to arrive next week.”
“Well, you can move your table closer to Bette and share a book with her. If that’s fine by Bette?”
Mr. Whitman looked at Bette with eyes that told more than a thousand words. It was a ‘you – are – going – to – say – yes – or – your – life – is – over’ kinda look.
“Of course,” Bette said. She smiled friendly at the girl, but not wholeheartedly. That was Fiona’s place, did the girl think she could take it?
