I Need My Best Friend – Part 11

    Chapter Eleven

    Saturday Night

Bette had been unable to fall asleep, after this afternoon she felt closer to Tina than she had in quite some time and her physical proximity was a bit much.  Tina had fallen asleep as soon as she became still, exhausted from the emotion of the day.  Bette, on the other hand, couldn’t quiet her mind from all the issues they had discussed.  She wasn’t sure Tina would ever believe she would be able to change so many of her past behaviors.  She finally decided to get up before her restlessness woke Tina.

She didn’t want the stereo or television to wake her so she decided to try to read for a while.  Tina found her in the middle of the night, asleep, glasses askew and her book across her stomach.

    ‘Bette, baby, wake up.’

    ‘Tina?’

‘You need to come back to bed, you can’t be comfortable out here.’

    ‘I couldn’t sleep, I thought I would read for a while.’

‘Why couldn’t you sleep, is something wrong?’

‘I guess I just couldn’t stop thinking about all the things we talked about.’

‘Is something bothering you, do you want to talk?’

    ‘Aren’t you tired of talking?’

‘I’m more tired of being unhappy, but we don’t have to talk if you don’t want to.’

‘Do you believe I’m sincere about trying to change?’

‘Oh Bette, I’m more sure of that than of anything else right now.’

‘I just need to believe there’s a chance for us.’

‘I don’t think I would have looked for you yesterday if there wasn’t.  I’m still confused and hurt.’

‘I know, why don’t you go back to bed.’

    ‘Not without you, come on.’

    Sunday Morning

When Tina woke the next morning Bette was already up, she walked into the kitchen and saw Bette out by the pool.  She poured herself a cup of coffee and joined her.

‘How long have you been up?’

    ‘Not long, good morning.’

    ‘Did you sleep?’

‘Yes, what would you like to do today?’

‘Would you like to talk about the baby?’

    ‘Are you up to it?’
