    Hope – 04

Waking to the smell of coffee, Bettes foggy mind thought that Tina was waiting for her in the kitchen like always. But one look around the messy home, reminded her of her wifes absence. Looking over at the clock and then at her appearance she went off to the shower.

Looking at the mirror, which Kit had helped her replace, she looked deeply at her reflection and only found her faults. Watching the wrinkles and lines disappear under her skilful application of make-up, she saw herself change, her reflection no longer showed her depression or her restless naps, instead she saw a flawless faade one where she was able to hide from her grief and pain. If only for a little bit.

Moving to the kitchen, she found Kit lost in thought and seemingly in her coffee. Reaching for her own cup she saw Kit hand resting on a piece of paper, which under closer scrutiny, Bette realised, was one of her cards.

One of the only things that seemed to bring a smile to her face nowadays, and gave her a momentary reprieve from the present. Feeling a spark of anger at Kits invasion of her privacy, she remembered that she left them on her table in plain sight. Shaking her anger away she felt the throbbing in her head intensify and she sat down as she felt dizzy.

Kit was startled out of her thoughts as Bette sat down abruptly. Seeing the pained expression on her sisters face she wordlessly got her some pain killers and water. Watching her sisters slow movements, her eyes tracked down her figure seeing the obvious weight loss which seemed to continuously occur despite her best efforts to stop it.

Asking Bette to stay at home for the day to rest, Bette shook her head vigorously which caused the pain to flare, holding her head tightly Bette told Kit that she needed to work to keep focused. Seeing the pain in Bettes eyes Kit reluctantly agreed not wanting her sister to start drinking her day away but insisted that she drive her to work.

Moving to the car Bette waited for the pain killers to work and settled in for the drive. Arriving at work, Bette found her office filled with flowers, each bouquet placed to catch the best of the light, Bette felt as if she had walked into her past. The mingling scents of the flowers and the dreamy atmosphere they created lead Bette back to a time of freedom and serenity. Hearing footsteps coming to the room she turned around eagerly waiting for Leo to appear, only to have James look in with a look of awe on his face.
