Her House – Short Story
"Your House" by Alanis Morissette (beautiful a capella version)

Depressive tears found their way down her cheeks as she touched the frame. Inside of the artistic frame was a beautiful picture of Bette holding her, looking at her with love – wanting her. That thought alone made her want to cry aloud, but it seemed too much in a house so otherwise silent, so she just let the tears escape. No one was around to see them, and so they fell.
Taking another step, she pulled open the drawer and took out one of Bette’s folded shirts, bringing it up to her face. The smell sent another wave of hopelessness over her, reminding her that she could never know that smell again. She was with Henry. Why was she with Henry? More tears fell as she carefully placed it back, closing the drawer and looking out toward the hall.
Was it so wrong to enjoy a bathroom, she thought, leaning on the door frame that led into the white tile. Maybe it was the memories that brought her back, and the images flashing through her mind at the way Bette would hold her. She found herself undressing, as if she needed to be completely vulnerable there, in Bette’s house again.
As her summer dress fell to the floor, she thought with a great sadness about Bette’s affair, and how they had argued. How she had gone with Henry for reasons that seemed less logical as each day passed. She stepped across the ice cold tile, her bare feet tingling with the sensation. She had missed everything about this house, and even the shower. It reminded her of everything about Bette, and the care she took in each detail, and in each expression. Henry never cared like Bette did. He couldn’t understand her the same way, and she didn’t know why she expected him to. What did she expect?
She touched the shower wall sadly, like she couldn’t feel the cool sensation on her fingertips. She stood under the shower head and turned the water on, gasping loudly as the cold water hit her. She couldn’t help but struggle for breath before it turned warm, caressing over her. Slowly, she closed her eyes as her hair straightened over them, blinding her. She couldn’t tell that she was crying again, and that was a comfort too.

Beautiful! Powerful emotions!
Great story,as always.Thank you.
HEY GR, That was “rip your heart out then stamp all over it” sad. There was a little flutter of hope at the end. So beautifully written that you brought tears to my tears. I could feel the regret and heartache from both gals as well as their confusion over the events that had led them to this position. A real masterclass in emotive writing. Thank you so much for sharing it with me. Your Loyal Fan and Friend.
That was extraordinary. This song is one of my all-time favorites and you did a wonderful job of conveying the thoughts of longing and loss. Just beautiful!! Thank you.
Sad but hopeful. It is a start to forgive each other. So for me, when Tina left the earrings and Bette rings her after finding them, it is the beginning of their journey back together. Somuch potential of a great love story in this post that I am almost hoping you will carry on with it. Thank you for posting.
Very beautiful and emotional.
Beautifully written. You take care and attention to your stories. The loving way you craft them does show. A sequel of how Bette feels about Tina being in their home? Maybe Bette strides forward in trying to reconcile the two of them? Very poignant w/o being sappy.
