    Hello sex. I am loneliness.

“Hello,” I stated softly to my drink. I may not be able to turn down a dare but I didn’t have enough courage to look into her eyes. I know when I do any will power I might have had will be gone.

“If the drink starts to answer back you have a problem.” Her voice is soft and sexy. It is the spring thaw after a harsh winter. I know I know. How lame is that? Very but I can’t describe it any other way. Let me try again. Her voice was thoroughly feminine. Without any effort she turned a simple sentence into a symphony. Lyrical as her voice was there was a distinct note of command. When she spoke she said more about herself then her perfume or her shoes ever could. When she talked, she gave me the promise of beauty making me forget that life is circular. See like I said spring thaw.

“Hey, come here often?” I managed to say and hated myself for it. I looked up and hated myself for that too.

“No,” her face was devoid of expression. “I am in town on business.”

“Let me guess,” I made a show of casing her up and down, “California, the southern part?”

“Am I that transparent?” She asked distressed to be that easily pegged.

“No. It is my job to guess things about people.”

    “Sales?”

    “Detective.”

She takes another look at me. Her brown eyes stop at my black motorcycle boots. Her eyebrow shot up in question. I was beginning to enjoy how expressive her face is.

“I had to masquerade as a biker bitch tonight,” I explained.

She leaned forward. I could feel her breath graze my cheek. “Did you catch your man?” Her eyes sparkle with something close to mirth but I know that it is just alcohol. “I bet you always get what you set out to get.”

“Not always. You can’t always get what you want.” She shifted on her stool, her thigh brushed against mine.

“Isn’t that the truth,” her eyes linger on her empty martini glass. I could feel her sadness hit me like a tidal wave. Her brow was etched with remorse and pain.

“Hey,” I put my hand on hers, a move that shocked us both. “Do you want to talk about it?”

    1. Thank you for posting this, it was amazing from the very first word to the last. So many feelings and emotions. As for the erotic part of the story, these lines were the best: “I slid out of the car. I didn’t look to see if she was following me. I got the confirmation I needed as her heels hit the wood of the stairs.” It somehow sounds very sexy, it must be the atmosphere you created with your writing. Once again, thanks for this brilliant story.

    2. Your command of words just takes my breath away. I have never read anything so beautifully written yet heartbreaking at the same time. You my friend are a wonderful writer.

    3. That was achingly sad, yet it was also hopeful…there really are good people out there in the world, who every once in a while show up at just the right time, giving us just what we need. Thank you for this…beautiful.

    4. So V, how’d you get so wounded and jaded. I quite liked the cop. I wish NYC could recruit a few more professors into their ranks, it would do a world of good. I remember seeing one corner a bad guy in Times Square once (back when it was pimpolicious). As a result of the cop adopting the classic “come to papa” pose, like the bad guy was going to jump into his arms, he took several shoots to the jaw. It was kind of like watching Mrs. Peel in The Avengers and thinking “kick him in the nuts, he’s wide open for it”. Oh well, law enforcement 101.

    5. R, NC17? I dunno, but that’s one of the most poetic R/NC17’s I’ve ever read. The atmosphere was palpable. With all the sadness of episode 9 and what’s to come in the remaining season, this rendition of the main character(s) and their struggles (especially Bette here) is a welcome respite. Look forward to the next one.
