    Heartbeat – Chapter 9

    Previously…

She opened the drawer on the bedside table and pulled out a book that looked interesting. A corner of a picture frame hidden underneath a magazine caught her vision. She pulled the frame from underneath the magazine. Her breath caught in her throat. It was a photo of the two of them that was taken at one of the many family barbecues they had hosted. Bette was lounging on a lounge chair with Tina leaning back against her between her legs. Their hands entwined and their eyes closed, both savoring the feel. Bette had often wondered what had happened to the photo and now she knew. Bette walked back to the window. She pressed her hand on the glass as she looked down at Tina. So close and yet so far. She thought.

    Chapter 9

What are you doing bringing up Andrea? The question swirled around in Tina’s head as she sat back on the lounge chair trying to figure out what happened with Bette. Did Bette marry Andrea because we were similar, because she found Andrea as my substitute? What are you even doing here with her? She kicked you out. She threatened to call the police. She didn’t let you try to explain what happened. she thought, reaching for her glass of wine on the table beside her. You’ve changed. She’s changed. She wanted to believe she did the right thing by inviting her former partner to her beach house. She had no idea what would come from this alone time with the woman, but yet she had invited her, wanted to take care of her and to make sure things were okay, unlike the last time.

Tina sat up, hand holding the stem of her wine glass, and she fought the urge to look up at the bedroom window, her bedroom, where Bette would be staying. Was it impulse or need that drove her to invite Bette? Was it the same need that propelled her to spend the night at her bedside? She had missed Bette…missed Bette like an amputee missing a limb. Seeing her former lover had awakened old memories, old hurts and her love. She wasn’t going to run away this time. She wasn’t going to let Bette push her away without the chance of an explanation, but she had questions for Bette also and she needed those answers maybe not tonight, but soon.

    1. Take the time you need – and write the story you want to write. Hope you’re able to get to it sooner rather than later, but the muse is a fickle friend. There seems to be repeated reference to the time they’ve lost in the last couple of chapters…

    2. What a wonderful chapter. The song choice was perfect but I’d much rather hear Adele sing it than Bob Dylan, I can’t imagine him singing that song it is so beautiful and so rich with her beautiful voice. Take your time and write the story the way you want, we shall be here waiting. Thanks for sharing a lovely story.

    3. I was thinking about nuevodka’s comment during the dance…especially the middle part. Is it confusing trying to figure out who is speaking? I left it that way because either one of them could be saying it and left it up to you to decide. Let me know if I should distinguish it.

    4. yesss that was heartbreaking and sweet at the same time, maybe this time they can forgive and probably never forget but move on to happiness
