    Heartache: Party of One

I walked into my one bedroom condo and I looked around. I sighed at the emptiness that was before me, it had been a week since Stacie left me. I tossed my keys on the table and dropped my briefcase on the floor and slowly walked in. Everyday since she left, I came home hoping she’d be there, sitting on the couch watching one of her shows. But alas, she wasn’t there. I’d been going over what went wrong in my head. How did I not see it coming?

”Bette, we’re just not on the same page.”

”But you said you wanted the same things as I. You wanted to build a future with me, marriage, a family. And now you’re saying it was all a lie?”

”No Bette, it’s not. I want a family, just not right now. You’re talking wedding songs, and houses and it’s overwhelming. I just need to focus on me. I need to get my licence back, register for classes and get financially stable. I hate that I’m always having to depend on you.”

”Stac, I am not hurting for money. I have my own successful art gallery and you wouldn’t have to work. You can go to school, and do what you need to to get your teaching degree.”

    ”That’s not fair to you.”

”You’re making up excuses. I’ve noticed you haven’t been in this a while.”

”If you’ve noticed, then why are you surprised?”

”I was blindsided, you left without saying anything.”

”I know, I’m a jerk for that but you deserve better.”

    ”I thought I found better.”

”I’m sorry, but we can still be friends.”

”No, I can’t just be friends with you. At least not right now.”

    ”Ok, well I’ll be here.”

    ”Ok.”

”On the bright side, at least we didn’t love each other.”

Those words stung me because I had fallen for her. I was ready to give myself to her completely, making her my wife had been my priority since we started seeing each other. My friends took me out for drinks. Telling me to move on and fuck that bitch. Maybe it was time, maybe I should just move on. I bet she’s not missing me at all.

I sat at my desk with my sushi and fired up my computer. I activated my dating site account and browsed around. This seemed like the easiest way to find someone. The screening process was less personal that if i didn’t like someone, rejecting her was easy. I clicked on profile after profile, sending message after message. I didn’t realize what time it was until my sister sent her usual ”Goodnight little sis” text.

”I can’t believe it’s eleven,” I whispered to myself, ”ok, one more look.”

Then a pair of hazel eyes caught me, wow, then her beautiful smile and blonde hair. I read her profile. Dare I say I was intrigued. She worked in Hollywood, seemed to have her head on straight. She loves art and photography. She has a four year old daughter. Fuck, she’s only twenty-four. That’s a total bummer, twenty-four and thirty-two is quite the age gap, but I messaged her anyway.

I was at a loss for words. Just seeing her picture, it made me weak in the knees. What would I say to such a beauty queen? I just went with something cool, not making me seem overzealous.

    porter32: Hey, how are you?

Oh my God, I probably sound like a dumb ass. But it’s sent, I can’t take it back. I’ll just have to wait and see if she responds..
