Gone Ashtray XVIII
What are you doing up there ? Sasha asked, admiring the beautiful view ? You could do it from here you know
Go away ! Leave me alone Alice shouted, not even turning to look at her. She was on top of the barrier, on the bridge, overlooking the water, and dangerously swaying.
Why ? The bridges not all yours. Besides, I love wasting my time on bridges, talking to drunk people.
Im not drunk Alice managed to blurt out, slightly dancing.
Yeah, youre just a little tipsy Sasha sarcastically retorted, leaning forward against the railing. So, are you going to chuck yourself off or what ? She asked Alice with an exasperated sigh.
Alice stopped dead in her tracks No, Im just up here, threatening to fall any moment, inventing a new sport ! Of course Im going to jump, do you have other stupid questions like that ?
She had put about 15 empty bottles in a row, leaving each time a space between them, and she was now slaloming between them.
Come on, stop being a drama queen Alice, were not in a casting for American Idol ! What are you waiting for ? The police coming to the rescue adding some more drama ? Dont count on that cause I didnt call them and at this late hour theres nobody around.
Alice turned and glared at her, at least at what she thought was Sasha, since there wasnt much light and her vision was blurry.
You think you can play me like that ? I perfectly know what youre trying to do. Youre playing the cool one who doesnt care because you think I would jump if you gave me the usualcaring speech. But youre wrong because I dont care if you care or not. I see through you : youre playing the one who doesnt care she seemed to struggle with the words about taking care of caring
Now youre repeating yourself Alice, but thats ok, drunk people cant help that. A chemical reaction happening inside your brain caused you to forget what you were saying she said, still able, in such a situation to quote one of her favourite song (The Streets : The Irony of it all). Besides, youre talking to a lamppost, Im over here she added, waving her arms.
There was a long silence, Sasha listening to the lapping of the water beneath them and Alice wondering if she should try to imitate what she had seen on TV : the jump event at the Olympic Games, backflips and so on.
Did you leave a message or something like that ? Sahsa asked and Alice looked blankly at her You might have a problem with your life and want to commit suicide, but you could at least write a parting letter, explaining to your friends that its not their fault. Otherwise theyll feel guiltyand youll have fucked up not only your but also their lives !
Alice didnt react, trying to follow Sashas train of thoughts not quite getting on her logic.
Youre ***** selfish you know ? Sasha went on, raising her voice the least you could do is keep your ***** to yourself
Alice stared at the water : Im not going to cry she finally shouted, not quite remembering what they were talking about.
I hope youre not, Im not in the mood for tears today Sasha retorted
I kissed her Alice whispered, kicking one of the bottles.
Sasha sighed, annoyed Do we have to talk about this ?
Shut up ! Alice burst out youre supposed to be supportive and listen to me !, Sasha instantly shut her mouth.
It was so perfect. And it worked too : she didnt marry Tonya Alice went on. There was a heavy silence, Sasha not daring to break it.
But it backfired Alice finally said, kneeling down, her gaze faraway. Im in love with her she whispered so lowly Sasha barely heard her. She seemed to be talking more to the water than to Sasha or even herself. She got back up and thought alright, lets go.
He rushed into his room, knocking a chair over and quickly switched his computer on.
The screen went white, then dark and finally a window opened and Shanes bedroom appeared. Shane was pacing, her head in her hands, clearly upset over something.
Mark wasnt usually in such a hurry but Shane hadnt been in the appartment for quite some time, always some place else at nights and at work during the day.
She hadnt brought a single ***** back.
Mark had tried to know what she was spending her days doing and had followed her a whole day long. She had pulled in front of a shaby house and had disappeared in it for more than five hours. He had crept into the garden, trying to catch a glimpse of what was going on inside by carefully looking through the windows and he had seen the woman. After that he had left but he had doe a bit of investigating and had discovered the womans identity : Cherie Jaffe, quite a VIP.
He had at first wondered what Shane was doing with her. She could have hooked up with prettier, sexier and younger girls, but Shane pretty much seemed to like her. Actually, he thought, she seemed addicted. Whenever Mark would see her without Cherie (at the appartment for example), she would pace, get nervous, not be able to calm down. At clubs, she would take drugs he had never heard of and get so high he sometimes feared for her life. She only seemed comfortable when Cherie was around.
At first he had welcomed this change in Shane, it gave him something else to analyze and understand in her but now he was feeling upset and a bit jealous too. He didnt like the new Shane, he preferred the old, cool one, always in control. But now, she seemed to be completely dependent of that woman and he had come to hate Cherie Jaffe, the old married woman as he liked to call her.
He had even witnessed Shane waiting for Cherie for hours, a situation the old Shane would have never been confronted to.
And now Shane was pacing in her room, leaving vocal messages on Cheries phone. And Mark was fuming in the room next door.
