From Scratch (Chapter 3)
Story written on January 26, 2012 by Casual Watcher.
The morning was silent, as many Saturday mornings often were in the white house in the sun, with not even the two young children stirring. When midday loomed over ahead, growing with the great orb of fire in the sky, and Helena lay awake but unmoving in her bed, she was not at all surprised when she heard the door click softly open. She turned with the sound of a small creak and smiled as she saw her children look inside to see whether or not she was awake. Satisfied with their find, they padded hurriedly into the room, pushing the door closed behind them, and made their way onto the large double bed, clambering beneath the duvet.
Smiling despite her little girl’s cold feet instantly going to her warm legs, Helena drew one arm from the warmth and hung it limply across her daughter, over to her son, pulling them both closer together and towards her. “Morning,” She whispered, and each offered her their own reply, greeting the new day.
“Can we get some breakfast?” Nicky whispered back after only a short moment of being nestled beneath the warm sheets. He sat up slightly and peered over his sister so as to better see his mother, waiting for a response.
Seeing as it was fast approaching noon, and despite enjoying the lie-in, Helena nodded and told them, “Come on, then.” When they made to move from the bed, Helena shuffled out the other end and grabbed her grey, satin dressing gown before following them out of the room and down the stairs, into the kitchen. As they entered the kitchen, footsteps from above – soon followed by the distant noise of a running shower – indicated that Andrew and Peter were awake and out of bed, also.
Leah was quick to seat herself at the table while Nicky hovered around the cupboards, retrieving three bowls for cereal. Helena took them off him with thanks, pouring in the Lucky Charms Andrew had bought especially for the kids. She added milk and took the bowls over to the table, setting one down in front of each of her children before taking a seat behind her own. She was slightly dubious about the nutritional value of the brightly coloured shapes in her bowl, but her children appeared to enjoy the change from their Shredded Wheat and Cheerios, and she had little energy to snoop around the fridge for anything else.
