    First, Last, & Forever? (Version 2.0 – Chapter 6)

    CHAPTER 6

Bette glanced at her watch again, finally forced to admit that she really needed to leave for her appointment with Dan Foxworthy.  She quickly swept the pile of glossy papers into their manila folder and returned her article file to her briefcase before picking up her car keys, and walking out the front of the museum.

“Goodnight, James.  I’m not coming in this weekend, but call me if anything important comes up.”

“Yeah, goodnight, Boss.  I promise not to call you at home, though.”  James smiled and waved, turning his attention back to the exhibit.

Bette barreled through the door at Foxworthy’s office, where he was waiting, looking at his watch.  “You’re late, you know.  I was just about to give up on you.”

“I’m sorry.  But you know I have not missed a single appointment since…well, since Tina left me.”  Bette apologized as she ran her fingers through her hair and smoothed her clothes, trying to regain her composure.  Bette hated to be late for anything, and being called out on her tardiness wasn’t helping.

Foxworthy considered Bette’s statement for a second, and agreed.  “You’re right.  You’ve come a long way from the first time you walked into my office, Bette.”

“Thank you…I think.”  Bette replied with a skeptical smile.

“So what’s on your mind tonight?” Foxworthy asked as he folded his hands neatly in his lap.

“Lots of things, actually.  The usual stuff, worrying about this exhibit I’m working on, money stuff, the baby…Tina…” Bette took a deep breath, and let out a long sigh.

“Well, I have a pretty good idea about those first three things, Bette.  That’s most of what we talk about.  What is it about Tina that’s on your mind?  You seem to be doing pretty well, from what you’ve told me.”  Foxworthy’s eyes narrowed as he studied the woman sitting across from him.

“Yeah, we’re doing great.”  Bette took another deep breath and looked down at the floor.  “But you know we haven’t been able to…to make love for months now because of Tina’s c-section…” Bette paused, and looked up and met Foxworthy’s stare.  He was surprised by what appeared to be genuine vulnerability emanating from Bette.

    1. Steph: this was a truly excellent chapter. Sensitively written and very, very real. Longterm relationships have sexual ebbs and flows for a myriad of reasons. What matters most is communication. Thanks for the way you handled this.

    2. Awesome chapter. I love the analytical side of things, and I agree that communication is exactly what is needed. There will always be moments when one partner needs to be reassured, while the other may not. At moments they may both need that. I learned the hard way, that communication is essential to keeping things fresh, even, secure, and solid. I hope that Bette and Tina can find that same key so it will divert any potential issues in the future. Thanks Steph!

    3. How come your Foxworthlessness makes sense? How come your Bette and Tina are communicating and working together toward greater understanding in their relationship? The flat place on my forehead was almost back to normal. The paradox of better TLW writing on the fanfic site makes me butt my head against a wall. I had almost forgotten…

    4. Foxworthy finally made some sense. Bette needs to talk to Tina let her know that if anything feels uncomfortable to let her know so she can change how she is doing things. Communication is the key. Now let her stop second guessing herself and go home and take care of her woman, give her everything that is in her heart.

    5. Wow–Bette is very caught up in her own insecurities! At least Foxworthy was able to help her look at things from a new perspective. She needs to let it go and keep the communication lines open between herself and Tina, which was indeed their problem back when we first met them. And they will have a sweet reunion with the love they still have for one another!

    6. Makes sense. I figured that was what bothered Bette. She’s still scared Tina will leave her. So, let’s get Bette home safely and let the night begin!!! PPS

    7. Okay maybe Foxworthy wasn’t an ass this time. Bette and Tina are both stressing unnecessarily. I truly think they should be talking to each other. Is Bette home yet?
