    Fire and Ice Chapter 10

    April 1999

"Alice…I need a favor" Bette’s voice, though mellow and yielding, sounded like a foghorn to Alice at this ungodly hour.

Alice felt around the surface of her night stand blindly.  Her fingers finally rested upon her glasses and she haphazardly put them on.  Crooked at first, she adjusted them to read the clock.  She could still barely make out the numbers, but she thought she saw a seven, a three, and…was that an eight?  Fuck it was early.

"Well, hello to you too, Bette." Alice groaned, rubbing her forehead.  The many martinis consumed the night before were making their presence known once again, flaring her vision.

"Please Alice.  I really need a favor…" Bette’s tone obviously apologetic.

Alice propped herself up on the bed and crossed her legs at the ankles.  She glanced at a fresh bruise and wondered how she had managed to…oh, yeah.  The stairs, she must have tripped over her stairs…

"Alice" Bette’s voice snapped Alice out of her recollection.

"Okay" Alice breathed.  "What can I do for you Bette….at seven fucking thirty in the morning?"

Bette rolled her eyes.  She held her tongue, not wanting to start a spat…not when she desperately needed Alice’s help.

"I need you to be my date on Friday.  For the artist dinner."  Bette stated, hoping Alice would be equally as cut and dry in her acceptance.

"What?  Bette…your date…?  Am I missing something here, because I thought we’d moved past this whole ‘us’ thing, right?  I mean I know I’m a one of a kind, but…"

Bette stopped Alice’s diatribe.  She needed an answer, not a rehash session of their "relationship", if you could even call it that.

"Alice, please.  It’s not like that.  I just…just would like to have your company.  I trust you and this is going to be a tough exhibit to tackle and I don’t need or want any distractions on Friday.  I just need someone who understands…"  Bette stopped.  She wanted to come clean.

    "Alice.  I’m groveling here…I’ll do anything…your dry cleaning for a week…"

"I don’t do dry cleaning Bette.  Come on.  You know this."  Alice almost laughed.

She didn’t buy this whole story Bette was laying down.  But one thing she did know that she could pick up a slight desperation in Bette’s tone.  It surprised Alice to hear Bette in such a vulnerable state.  She had to know what was going on…

    1. I just got to love Alice! It’s like her mouth has a mind of its own – she just won’t stop digging until she finds something. I can’t wait for that dinner so please post real soon.

    2. I absolutely love that you’re soooooo slow. I think that a story is much more worth it when it’s full of details to give you sort of a path to catch the intentions or the personality of the characters (and I kinda miss it around here). I love the way you write them, love the way you seemed to understand them and create situations we have no difficulty in seeing them in. I mean, we can see Bette speaking those things and Alice beeing sooooo… Alice. You’re one of the best writers here and I am very thankful of you for writing such a nice story. Keep it going.(Sorry for my poor english, but be aware I only registered here to leave you this comment. Hope it encouraged you, for you’re too precious to stop writing).

    3. Love it, love it, love it. This is gonna be s much fun and Bette is gonna be in so much trouble. Can hadrly wait for the next chapter. Poor Eric, he is toast. PPS

    4. Alice is a good noisy friend, she is cute, poor Bette she is completely in an uncharted territory as she said, I hope the dinner party won’t turn out to be something disappointing and unexpected. Post soon and it’s indeed frustrating to have to wait that long to find out what will happen between them but I know it’s going to be worth the wait. Love

    5. Alice cracks me up, and endless questioning drives me nuts but that what makes her a good reporter to get the scoop!,lol…bet tina will be dressed to kill as well… :) PPS
