Exploring New Options – CH02
Kitt and Ivan sat on the bench looking like beaming school children holding hands and smiling at each other. The air between them was pleasantly light even though they were both taken with the unexpected kiss. They continued to sit and enjoy the quiet time they were sharing away from everything and everyone. Kitt was the most comfortable and relaxed shed been in a long time. Shed forgotten about her struggles against drinking. She forgot about her son and her distant father. Shed forgotten about all the things that made her feel confined. Being with Ivan was liberating to her and she was thankful for it.
Ivan? Kitt said quietly.
Yes?
Do you have any plans this evening?
Ivan thought for a moment.
No, nothing that I can think of. Whyd you ask?
Oh, I was just thinking that maybe we could spend some more time together this evening. I dont have anything in particular in mind. Just to be in your company would be good for me.
Ivan smiled. He liked the sound of that. He would do anything she wanted him to do.
I have a few small errands to take care of this afternoon, but I should be done by five or six I guess. So, any time after that?
Sure. Are you ready to leave now?
Kitt smiled.
No, not really. I like it here, but I guess we should get going if I want to finish my errands on time.
Ivan stood up and cocked his arm waiting for Kitt to take hold. They walked back up the winding path to the car and headed back to town. Ivan held Kitts hand the entire drive back and kissed it off and on. She smiled at him and leaned her head back letting the wind blow through her hair.
When they arrived at Kitts apartment, Ivan got out and opened the door for her. He walked her to her door and waited for her to go in. He kissed her gently on the mouth.
Thanks for a wonderful lunch and afternoon Ivan.
My pleasure. See you later.
Okay.
Ivan drove away and Kitt entered her apartment.
Anxious about her evening plans, Kitt began to clean up her apartment. She made the calls she needed to make, she ran to the nearby store to pick up a few things, and came back to spend the rest of her time primping. She acted like a high school girl preparing for a first date. As she was fixing her hair, she stopped long enough to consider her feelings toward Ivan. He was out of her norm being white, he was younger, and he was really a she. Kitt was momentarily taken aback with her first real acknowledgement of Ivan. Even though Bette told her that Ivan was in love with her and courting her at every opportunity he got, Kitt was still in denial. When they kissed earlier, she gave none of her current realizations any thought. All she saw when she looked at Ivan was a kind, caring, and loving person who accepted her as is. It was hard for her to think of Ivan as a woman and even though she spent countless time in the company of lesbians, she still didnt know or truly understand the dynamics of it all. She was lost in thought for a moment, then shrugged it off. She didnt care. Kitt was happy and for now that was all that was important to her. She checked the time and saw she only had fifteen minutes left before Ivan would arrive. She took the tray of snacks out, took a couple of glasses and sat them on the counter. She looked herself over one last time and sat on the couch watching TV, trying to maintain her composure.
The doorbell rang and Kitt jumped up to answer it.
Hey Ivan. Come in.
Hey Kitt. You look beautiful.
Kitt blushed and closed the door behind Ivan. She ushered him into the living room. He handed her a bag.
For me? She blushed again.
Open it.
Kitt opened the bag and took out a plastic carton containing a small plant. She smiled and immediately found a home for it on a shelf near the window.
Whats it for?
A beautiful plant for a beautiful lady.
Kitt hugged Ivan and the same feeling she felt earlier came over her. She kissed him softly on his mouth and waited for his response. She knew she was making all the moves and wanted to be sure she wasnt being too forward. Ivan responded affirming Kitts move on him. He gently ended the kiss and traced his hand across her cheek.
Lets sit. Ivan stated motioning to the couch.
Before she sat, Kitt poured some iced tea and took it to the coffee table.
Thanks. Youre quite the hostess. Look at this nice tray. You didnt have to.
I wanted to. Plus, I couldnt invite you over to share time and not feed you. Its not polite. Kitt teased.
Kitt sat beside Ivan; they watched TV and talked between the shows. They talked about their mutual musical interests. Kitt talked a little bit about her life and childhood. She spoke of her relationship with Bette good and bad, and how all she wanted now was some cohesion in her life. Then Ivan became quiet. Through their entire conversation, they hadnt mentioned their kiss or the possible change in their status. He didnt want to force anything between them, but found himself a little curious. Kitt had made it very clear that she wasnt looking for a relationship, but now her actions were telling a different story.
Kitt, Id like to ask you something.
Kitt turned the TV off; sensing it was something that required her full attention.
Sure. What is it?
When we spoke a little while ago, you gave me the impression that you werent sure if you wanted to pursue anything with me. What changed your mind?
Kitt was taken aback. She wasnt sure what to say. She thought for a second. She actually didnt know what to say because she hadnt really given it any thought. She reacted to what seemed to flow naturally for her and now she felt conflicted.
Kitt sighed.
