Every Glance Speaks – Chapter 3

    ~ Bette Porter ~

The blonde walks off without even turning. It’s a shame.. She looked as though she’d have a great take on the print. She looked immersed in its effect while she’d been stood there.

Get a grip, Bette. You saw her from behind for a few seconds. Hardly a worthy character reference.

I turn back to the snapshot for a parting glance, knowing I’ll be standing in this very spot the second the exhibition is over. I wonder who to approach next. Tonight’s been pretty slow in comparison to the usual promotional gatherings I’m obligated to throw and attend.

I’ve been in this business long enough to know how most of the attendees function. The eager artists approach me towards the beginning; The experienced wait out the evening until our meeting can appear spontaneous; Donors almost never approach but merely catch my eye when they’re ready to be tackled.

The gallery is one of the largest we have and so it’s almost impossible to spot the required people.

    Almost impossible.

Near the bar, there’s a figure I suspect is the one I’ve been waiting for. I recognise him only from an old shot on the ArtWorld website but he has a brow that in unnaturally low, as if he’s always in thought. I run a hand quickly through my straightened hair and I smooth over my unblemished trouser suit. I paint a smile on my face that Alice tells me is enough to charm the strictest nun.

He seems to be in a neutral mood. I walk to the bar and stand a little way away; I know how to work this naturally. Turning back towards the room, I glance up at him and smile in preparation; he’s not looking my way yet. I take the opportunity to observe him up close. There’s a woman on the other side of him that I can’t fully see. He seems to be half-ignoring her, gazing around the room as he speaks to her.

God, I hate it when people do that.

I am more than a little disappointed. I’m generally a pretty good judge of character, and this guy is giving me a bad vibe. I’m hesitant to taint my vision of him.. Primarily because of that picture – Surely he could not have produced such a poignant piece if his countenance holds no room for empathy. He looks slimy and I feel vaguely disgusted by him although I can’t for the life of me put my finger on what repulses me.

    1. YAY! Bette amd Tina met each other! :D It was about time! Just kidding! Alice needs Dana not Bette! xDGreat chapter and excited to see Tina`s POV about Bette! Congrazt for the storyPlease post more soon

    2. Its crazy how meeting someone will stop you in your tracks at times…even the most ferocious lions can be turned into kittens and Bette proves that. PPS

    3. I must take issue with your disclaimer: the writing of this instalment is very good indeed. If Tina’s response to their first meeting is anywhere near as intense as Bette’s, then the brutish Eric should be out of the picture in record time. Bring it on!

    4. Of course Bette is mesmerized by Tina, who wouldn’t be! Now Bette just needs to use her dazzeling smile and charm to lure the beautiful Ms. Kennard away from that Ass Eric. PPS!!

    5. Eric is so not a nice person. He deserves to be by himself. It seems that Bette has been stricken by the same emotions as the little boy was in the picture. Just by looking into Tina’s face and eyes Bette loses herself in Tina. Alice at home but Tina is Bette’s home.
