When Alice got back to her room she changed into a pair of comfy sleep pants and slid under the covers with the box of jelly beans and a bottle of wine. She tried to avoid it for a while with some bad television, but she knew she was going to have to face it. Though she wasn’t sure if she was up for it, she reached into her purse and took out Dana’s letter.

    Dear Alice,

I know that I’m the last person in the world you want to hear from right now, but there are some things that I need you to know.

First, I am so sorry about all of this. I wish I could say it was just about what I did or that I didn’t tell you about it or that you found out as you did, but it’s for all of it. Most of all, it’s because my own short comings put you at risk and put our future at risk.

I don’t want to insult you by trying to make excuses. There is nothing that I am going to say that will make up for what I’ve done, both through action and inaction. All I can say is that I was wrong, on so many levels, I was wrong and I am so sorry. I wish that I could go back to that night and change what I did. Our lives would be just as they were and we were happy.

I think that what I’m most sorry for is that. For taking away that happiness. I did something I never would thought I was capable of doing, I gave you a reason to doubt my love for you and through that doubt our happiness.

Through my entire life, I have only ever really had two givens: I was good at tennis and I love Alice Pieszecki. Those two givens are what has gotten me through the last ten years. I had something to do when I got up in the morning and more importantly than that, I had someone to love every day. For years before we were a couple through today, you were my first thought when I woke and my last before I fell asleep. To be totally honest, most nights you were what filled my dreams.
