    Drowning – 23

Previously After dropping Tina off, Dana drove aimlessly. She wasn’t sure how long she had driven, but she knew it had to be a while because the gaslight blinked on. She had been trying to clear her head. She was so torn. She wanted her friends to be right. She wanted to be able to talk to Alice and together they would work this out. But if she did that, she could hurt Alice. Even though Alice always said she would do anything for Dana, Dana didn’t really think that included putting herself in harm’s way. The only way to know for sure what Alice would want to do was to ask her and that put her at risk. She couldn’t get out of the circle of logic, which left her where she was when she started the drive, knowing that she couldn’t go to Alice.

She parked in front of Shane’s place and slowly walked up the stairs to the front door. She put her key in the door and didn’t even notice that the door was unlocked. She walked into the house and headed towards the couch. As she went to sit down she realized someone was already sleeping on the couch. She got closer and a tear ran down her face as she looked down at Alice, curled up on the couch asleep.

    Chapter 23

Dana stood there at the side of the couch for quite sometime. If someone asked her, she wouldn’t be able to tell him if it was a minute or an hour. All she knew was that she was lost in memories. Somewhere between the mix of wine, emotion and fear, she found a peace for the first time tonight gazing at Alice’s sleeping form.

Dana studied Alice’s features as though there would be a test later. Her eyes first went to Alice’s eyes. She looked at the soft lines that have begun to form around her eyes. They weren’t the deep-set lines that proved age, they were soft, subtle lines that gave her face more depth and character. Alice didn’t quite agree with that observation but to Dana, she saw those lines, and realized why they were called laugh lines. Even in sleep, Dana saw Alice’s smile when she saw those lines and that smile made Dana’s heart full.
