“The position I hold does not allow me to take pleasure from one who serves my position. No matter what the circumstances I hold power that you cannot balance.”
Rau heard that she was not good enough or worthy to pleasure a Queen. “As you command, Majesty” she said stiffly.
Rhaina heard the hurt and wished to correct the misconception that she was not worthy. “It is not about birth or rank, it is about freedom to make choices free of coercion of any kind. Being your Sovereign is coercion in and of itself.”
“If I were to renounce my Romulan birth rite and become a citizen of the Federation would you still deny me?”
“I could not” Rhaina flushed with the admission. As a path was made clear that she could have her.
Rau was ready to blast her when the meaning of her words and the expression on Rhaina’s face finally registered. “You could not what?” Rau whispered.
“I could not deny you.” Rhaina admitted again. “I want you so very much” Rhaina turned away to hide her increasing arousal.
Rau’s mind sped at the speed of light. “It takes two standard weeks to be granted a petition for dissolution of Romulan citizenship and another two weeks to be granted Federation citizenship. I will no longer be the Commander of the Royal Guard. Only one born of Romulus can hold that position.”
“No.” Rhaina held up her hand. Her heart sinking at the thought. “That is too much to ask. You are one of the finest examples of Romulan honor I have ever met.”
“As are you, Majesty” Rau returned pressing her suit. It made her head spin that she was actively and openly pursuing the Queen of Rhemus.
“I will relinquish the Crown and that will resolve our problem more efficiently” Rhaina declared. “Christina has rejected her claim there is no heir to follow me. Let the Crown of Rhemus remain empty.”
“No Majesty.” Rau shook her head adamantly. “Rhemus needs you. The Romulan people need both their Queens. It is a part of our fabric and your presence has been sorely missed. I would then be dishonored for taking the Sovereign for my own pleasure and not thinking of the whole of my people.”
“It appears we are at a standoff Royal Commander.”
“I believe there is room within the code for a Royal Paramour” Rau advanced. “I would have to bear the colors of a mistress however I would not be willing to share my place in your bed with any other.”
“You wonder about my relationship with my husband Spock?”
“I do.”
“He has recently united with his soul mate. He sent you to me in recognition of what he sees you mean to me already. Your place would be yours alone.” Rhaina’s eyes narrowed. “Is there one whom I would be sharing you with?”
“No.”
“I do wonder though about all we are both willing to sacrifice for the opportunity to be together when we have not in fact tested our fit.” Rhaina mused a request for a sample could not be clearer.
“That Majesty you will not know that until you make me in fact your paramour. There is a custom for this and if we are to be recognized legitimately by the people of Romulus and Rhemus you must court me publicly and request my consent to be your lover before we take that step.” Rau puffed up now that she had the promise of more. She would not let anything stand in her way of claiming this woman if she could.
Rhaina blanched. “Does Christina have to know?”

“Thank you for your open minds in this scifi tale.” Indeed! — E&C’s mating reminded me of ‘The Left Hand of Darkness’ by Ursula K. LeGuin, one of the first of feminist scifi works. This is from the wiki about the book, “The inhabitants of Gethen are sequentially hermaphroditic humans; for twenty-four days of each twenty-six day lunar cycle they are sexually latent androgynes, and for the remaining two days (kemmer) are male or female, as determined by pheromonal negotiation with an interested sex partner. Thus each individual can both sire and bear children.” Fellow readers, check out this book. It’s great. Also, ‘The Mists of Avalon’ and ‘Kindred’ by Octavia Butler. I read “Left Hand” many, many years ago. Your story brought it back from the past. Wow! Thanks, Kelika!
BTW, ‘The Mists of Avalon’, a retelling of the Arthurian Legends from a feminist perspective, is by Marion Zimmer Bradley. There’s a movie of it starring Anjelica Houston and Julianna Margulies.
ha! Was that Rhaina being apprehensive about Christina knowing because of the whole public royal courtship thing, and Christina’s objections to it, or is it simply a case of Rhaina not wanting her daughter to know that mother dearest has a pretty healthy libido? And that’s before we even get to the bottom (wrong term?) of the Kirk-Spock thing… Everything about her parents’ love lives is just a small distraction though, compared to what Christina’s been getting up to with Elizabeth… it keeps getting hotter with them. Like, super hot. How long is a Vulcan/Romulan gestation? Thanks kelika.
K it’s 88 degrees here in S. Texas and now even hotter with this new chapter and I loved it,,,,,,and I loved how Rhaina and Rau made an important decision in their lives. Can’t wait for more to come!

WOW!!! I guess Spock’s recognition of Rhaina’s need to be with Commander Rau is what it must be like to deal with ‘enlightened beings’ especially since he has found his soulmate in Kirk and he seems to want her to have solace and fulfillment as well. It great the Rhaina and Rau are exploring the dynamics of what it would take for a relationship between them to become a reality. But why wouldn’t Rhaina want Christina to know about them? Kelika, I can’t wait to see where you will take us next. Wherever it is…I’m up for the ride and loving every minute of it. Thanks for writing. PPS.
