    Crossroads – Ch. 1

As Lara reached the gate to Centre Court, two ushers approached her.

"May we see your credentials please?"

Lara paused and lifted the pass hanging from her neck for inspection. "Please, I’m late—I got lost on my way here, and I think Dana’s match has already begun."

The usher inspecting her pass laughed and said, "Right, miss…you’d have been better off catching the action on the telly rather than trying to sneak your way into the stadium."

Confused, Lara looked down to find that her library card was dangling from the end of the nylon cord. "What the hell? I don’t understand—"

"Oh but we do–you’ve been caught out…now kindly be on your way, or we’ll have the authorities assist you." The ushers crossed their arms and looked menacing.

Lara took a step back and glanced around. She noticed a concession stand with a monitor showing the court. Nodding at the ushers she moved towards the area saying, "I’ll just be over here looking for my pass."

She quickly found her way to the monitors and looked eagerly for Dana.

The miniature version of Dana took a deep breath and bounced the tennis ball two times on the service line. She bounced lightly from foot to foot and wiped her brow with her forearm. She scanned the crowd for a familiar face, but didn’t seem to find what she was looking for.

"I’m right here, baby." Lara whispered fiercely. "I’m so close."

Shaking her head, Dana bounced the ball twice more before serving. As she started forward to begin the volley, she looked down at her feet, clearly startled. The camera panned down to show the court cracking open and tendrils of vegetation creeping out of the fissure towards Dana. Dana began to backpedal, fear written on her face, but the tendrils quickly snaked around her ankles and pulled her feet out from under her. Slowly Dana was pulled towards the abyss, as the vines continued to twine ominously around Dana’s legs appearing intent on devouring the desperately struggling woman. Dana looked over her shoulder directly into the camera and screamed, "Lara, please help me! Why did you leave me alone?"

Her screams echoed through Lara’s head as she struggled with the ushers to break through into the stadium. "Dana, I’m coming—-hold on, baby!" She twisted one final time to squirt away from the men and dashed to the court. With disbelieving eyes she watched as Dana’s hand disappeared beneath the closing rend in the earth. As quickly as it had started it was over, leaving nothing but a dropped tennis racquet as evidence of Dana’s recent presence on the court.
