Cradle of Life – Part 1
She had planned out the conversation, listed the pros and cons. There were arguments, and counter arguments and counter-counter arguments. She had no intention of going down without a fight.
Today was an important day, when an important question will be asked. Where the very nature of there family will be challenged, and the expectations of their lives, loves and bodies will be questioned.
Today, Bette Porter would converse about having another child with Tina Kennard.
And – life as they know it will change.
If only Bette didn’t feel the need to be so dramatic.
It had become a tradition in recent months, on Sunday afternoons, they would go out as a family. To the Zoo, park, beach or the boardwalk. Anywhere that meant they could spend time as a family.
Getting back together had meant that the night following would become special too, all of them in the house together, enjoying a home cooked meal where each of them were in charge of a side, be it a salad, vegetables or rice.
It were these moments that cemented how much like a family they really were and they all loved it. Tonight was no different.
Bette was standing behind Angelica who was on a chair, making her tall enough to stir the pot.
“Mama B, do we have to stir it so much?” Angie asked with an exaggerated shake of her arm, “My arm ‘urts so much.” Dropping her shoulder, she switches arms and looks at the pot morosely. Making grits weren’t as much fun as cooking cookies.
Reaching around in front Bette relieves Angelica of the spoon, pulling the child closer to her with the other hand. “Why don’t I stir for awhile?” She asked, planting a kiss on the top of Angie’s head.
Leaning her head back, Angelica grants Bette a smile, “Thank you Mama, it’s lots of work.” She drawls, causing Tina to laugh from the counter behind them.
“All the stirring makes them extra yummy Angie.” Tina explains, giggling. “We want them to be yummy for our tummy don’t we baby?”
“Yup Mummy. Me likes eating ‘sotto, me don’t like making them.” Angelica happily informed, bouncing on the balls of her feet restlessly.
Bette tightened her arm around Angelica, effectively stopping her movement. Leaning her head down, Bette whispered in Angelica’s ear, “Do wanna help Mama T bread the chicken?”

Love it!!! THank you
Love it. PPS.
I was flabbergasted that even IC would announce an adoption without so much as a conversation shown given their history and JUST having reconciled… THEN she went from that bit of news to “You were flirting with her…” and i threw my shoe at the television. Thank you.
Thank you, it would have been nice to see this on screen.
This was a wonderful way to bring about the addition to the family. Angie was a hoot in the kitchen.
Ooh, I liked it! IC leaves so many blanks to fill in, and I’m loving your vignettes. Keep them coming!
love these off camera scenes! can’t wait for the next chapter.
I love the start. Please continue soon
Hi, sweet Deean! It’s great that you decided to analyze Bette’s point of view at Motherhood. We noticed since S1, that one of the most cherished dreams by Bette was to have children. We witnessed all the difficulties they went through, i.e. the donnor search, the therapy sessions, the gynecologist appoitments, etc. Everything that she contributed, as to make that wish come true. Then, the loss of the first child, which was devastating to both women. It didn’t help that Tina went on her back and proceeded to have the insemination, without Bette’s knowing it. Had Bette been aware of the second insemination and enjoyed the child’s growing process, then there would have not been any Candace or another distraction, for that matter. S2 and S3 only increased her desire for more children, as Tina started to withdraw her the rights she had as a non-birth mother. Even in S4, when she met Jodie, Bette was very proud to speak about Angelica and her fascination with children. In fact, that was one of the first disagreements that she faced with Jodie. Apparently, the only one who shared those dreams about having a family was Tina. Therefore, it is not a surprise that Bette brings the subject again in S6. She had mentioned it, briefly, at the end of S5. We believe this time Bette wants Angie to have a companion, as she suffered being a loner, when she was a child. Tina was right in her assessment. Bette’s age makes for a very complicated pregnancy, with lots of risks implied, not only for the mother, but also for the expected child. Therefore, adoption seems like the right choice at this point of time. It is now Tina’s turn to support Bette in achieving her longtime cherished dream. Thanks for bringing on this chat, which was not screened on the show, but that was important to understand the interior motives that draw both B&T to seek for an adoption alternative. PPS Hugs & kisses on both your cheeks.- Lucero & Marsha (Proud Salsa Aunties to the ever loving JC and Eunichick)
love it when writers fill in the blanks… and with IC, we have alot to fill in…PPS
