    Chapter 1

    Shane woke up, blinking as she tried to orient herself to her surroundings. Tina was still asleep, fully clothed, beside her, and Shane allowed a moment of considering what it would be like to wake up with Tina every morning. Not just on a morning when they had been up talking about Bette until the wee hours, and Tina couldn’t face another bout of sleeplessness alone in this big empty house, in their big empty bed.

     

    Shane reached over slowly, so slowly, and gently brushed back the hair from Tina’s face. At that moment, Shane was unable to summon even a speck of understanding for Bette and what she had done. It didn’t even matter that Bette was currently in some kind of emotional freefall and seemed intent on ruining her life. There just wasn’t a good enough explanation for how anyone could break this beautiful woman’s heart.

     

    “Tina,” Shane whispered, lightly caressing Tina’s cheek with the back of her hand.

     

    Tina stirred, shifting closer to Shane, reaching an arm loosely around her waist.

     

    “*****, she thinks I’m Bette,” Shane realized, simultaneously horrified and exhilarated.

     

    “Hey, sleepyhead,” Shane said a bit more insistently, rubbing Tina’s arm.

     

    Tina’s eyes fluttered open and she suddenly understood where she was and whom she was with.

     

    “Oh, God! Shane. I’m so sorry,” she said, sitting up abruptly, still clumsy from sleep.

     

    “Hey, easy. I’m not going to bite you,” Shane said, sitting beside Tina and resting a steadying hand on her back.

     

    “I didn’t…I thought you were…”

     

    “It’s okay. No harm done,” Shane said reassuringly.

     

    Tina rubbed her face, trying to wake up, not wanting to. She’d been dreaming about Bette, and it had felt so real, so good. And now it was gone, evaporated, like their life together.

     

    “Did you get any sleep?” Tina asked, pushing thoughts of Bette back to that place just below the surface where they always waited for her.

     

    “Couple hours. I crashed right after you.” Shane wasn’t going to admit that she’d sat up for a while watching Tina sleep, guarding over her as she tossed and turned, more than once leaning down to whisper that everything was going to be okay.

      I would often go back to this jewel and re-read it. I’m elated you are giving it back to us.

      It’s like watching “Cassablanca” or “Desert Hearts” for the tenth or eleventh time…and enjoying it just as much as the first time you discovered it.

    20. As one of the folks that really enjoyed this story and I happy for those that didn’t get a chance to read it the first time. I get to enjoy it anytime I like since it is one of the stories that I copied/pasted into a word document so that I could refer back to it anytime that I liked.

      That’s what’s so nice about this site… you have lots of fic to choose from if something doesn’t suit your tastes. I, for one, am quite happy that she decided to repost it, since I never got to see it the first time around… nice to see someone who isn’t afraid of experimenting with unconventional pairings.

I can’t tell you how happy I was to see you reposting this story…as you already know, I have the complete story on my computer (thanks for e-mailing it to me), so I can go back to it whenever the need arises. This story, along with The Chase by Shakennotstirred, are my two all time favorite stories on this site. Now, don’t get me wrong, there are about ten other stories that are right up there…but in the end, if I had to choose…I would choose Comfort Enough and The Chase. Thanks for bringing it back, so all the new readers can experience your spot on characterizations, and your uncanny dialogue. When I read your writing…no matter what story…I can actually visualize your words, coming out of JB and LH’s mouths. Same with Shakennotstirred. It is natural to want to share your favorite writers with others, and you two are who I always refer people to. Thanks again!!!
