    Comfort Enough

    “Tina, it’s Jane Sinclair”

When Bette heard the attorney’s voice on the answering machine, her first instinct was to hit the pause button. It was clearly a message for Tina, not for her. But once the topic of selling the house was raised, Bette couldn’t bring herself to stop the tape. Because she couldn’t bring herself to move at all.

“No,” Bette whispered. “Not yet. Not now. I need more time.”

Time for healing and nurturing and reassuring. Time to show Tina how much potential they still had. Time to prove that she could be the parent that she’d always wanted to be. The partner she’d once been. The friend she’d tried to become over these last few weeks.

For an instant, Bette’s hand hovered over the delete button, longing to make it all go away. The pressure, the time constraints. She wanted to take Tina’s hand and spirit her off somewhere, somewhere far away where they could figure things out together without anyone making demands or offering advice or telling them what to do.  Instead, Bette jotted a quick note and left, seeking solace within the insulated confines of the Saab and the wide expanse of darkness that was night.

As she roamed aimlessly up and down the streets, Bette considered the recent conversation she’d had with Alice, wincing as she recalled her misplaced confidence in her own ability to be Tina’s friend. How had she ever imagined that would be possible? How had she deluded herself into thinking that she’d be able to graciously stand aside while Tina slipped away from her?

“What was I ***** thinking? Was I even thinking at all?” Bette asked herself.

Thinking had never been Bette’s strong suit, at least not where Tina was concerned. Normally cool and cerebral, Bette had been gradually transformed by Tina’s presence in her life. She had softened, somehow. Become more vulnerable. After years of keeping her own counsel, she had truly shared herself with Tina. But then, when they began to struggle, as the months of poor communication added up and Bette felt her fear and resentment growing, that process worked in reverse. Bette retreated, pulling back, showing less of herself. And she knew Tina felt it. She had seen the hurt in those beautiful brown eyes. Hurt that she had caused.

    1. You have laid these characters open so beautifully raw. Although they can never go back to the way it was at the beginning, they have the wonderful opportunity to make going forward that much better.

      Wonderfully done!

    2. Last night I read all of your posts; it kept me sane on a very long night of work. Thanks for that. When I went home I was telling my love she should read some of these stories as there are many gift writers on this site. I gave you as an example; how you create a new B&T reality, give us background, and a real sense for who the characters are. I told my love that the l-word better treat OUR characters right. I forgot that they do not belong to us. I know, however, they are in much better hands here on this website than the professional writers at the show. Thanks to you fanficchick and the other wonderful writers on this site, I bow down to you all. Thank you, for getting me through this LONG break from the characters, for giving me the courage to write myself (not that I have done anything with my stories they are un l-word related), and for inspiring me to take an active stance against those who oppress us. I do not know enough words to thank you properly, just know my thanks runs deep, cutting down to the soul of me.

    3. This is one of my favorite chapters of all time on the site. I have read this one more times than I can count. Thanks for posting it again, so I may continue basking in beauty.

    4. OMG thank you..that was sooo beautiful im so glad Tina is able to try again and have a family again too.. amazing..love it now bring us some “love make up moment”..lol… cant wait for next post

    5. THE REAL SEASON TWO

(Isn’t it sad when a fanfic writer has a firmer grasp on your characters than you do?)

I feel like crying. For all the opportunities we lost. For the spare beauty of this writing.

      Thank you.

    6. Wonderful, absolutly wonderful. Its not going to be easy, but I am so glad Tina is willing to give it a go. I can now go to sleep knowing all is looking up for B& T.
