    Frozen – Chapter 2 – Cold Flames

    CoverChapter 2

The hours crept by silently; the exact opposite thing my thoughts were doing: they kept roaming around my mind way too noisily.

During that excruciating waiting I learnt a lot about the new Bette. Apparently, she became a huge figure in the art world: she opened two galleries. One in New York and the other one was in Europe; Rome for being precise. And she was thinking about opening another one. In Paris, maybe. Peggy helped her for she thought working as a curator at the Whitney wasn’t really a good position for her. Her art knowledge should expand and reach overseas. In Peggy’s opinion, her talent was too good to be wasted like that, within the US confines.

I was shocked to learn all of it from Helena as Bette and she never really got along, since what happened during our first break up. Not even Kit knew most of what the British woman told us. What stunned me the most, was the way she talked about her: it was in a worshipping kind of way. I could see her eyes shine as she spoke and the light coming from the fireplace gave them an even brighter look. I didn’t know why but a wave of jealousy hit my body. Could have something happened between those two? Another brick added to my already-too-thick wall of thoughts.

As she went on and on talking about Bette’s successes I could feel a stinging sensation building up in my gut. She knew a lot about the new Bette and she knew too much. Where she was living now: a huge penthouse nearby Central Park; when the new show was coming. She told us about her last exhibit and how greatly she did. She seemed as though she couldn’t stop talking. I missed a lot about her. Hell, I missed her! And the sad thing was that I didn’t have the right to feel that way. I drove her away. She was beaten; she was broken; she was falling right before my eyes and I stabbed her… a perfect, accurate stab into her heart.

Helena words seemed to show a stronger Bette; even more confident than the one I met, in 1997, at the Bette Porter Gallery.  And I was pleased, at least, she managed to fix her own issues. Although, I didn’t know that every bit – little piece by little piece – of the loving, passionate and caring Bette I knew was buried beneath an insurmountable mountain of sorrows.

    1. Shit, this is so heartbreaking. Great writing, i can feel every emotion.

Is there a chance Tina told Angelica about Bette?

I understand Bette’s reaction, but i hope she will warm up to Angelica.

      Again, great writing.

    2. “Not one single emotion”, The pain still exists between them and maybe not even Angelica can bridge the chasm. So sad, so sad. Maybe the fire can burn through. PPS

    3. Wow, dear. Now, really surprised me.
you know how much I love your talent. It was a great chapter and emotions everywhere (mine too)
I understand Bette’s reaction, it made her survive what happened. but also with Angelica?
have a bad feeling that you do not do happy end: (
      please posting soon

    4. Wow im speechless, it must took everything in Bette to not go over and kiss and hug Angelica im sure she still believe that’s her child..but I love the way she treating Tina because Tina deserves it. I always wanted Bette to not give in so easily to Tina all the time I mean she needs to work hard to earn her love and trust back…can’t wait til next chapter..loving this

    5. The imagery you used of the flames and the rocks were emotive and describes their past and present relationship well. It is heartbreaking to see Bette behaving so coldly towards Tina and Angie. Looks like Tina has created a monster. Please bring back our girls together again.

    6. You have me hooked on this story. I love the imagery you created with the snow, trees, rocks, flames and lighthouse. I can feel the cold that Tina feels looking out the window and looking at her past. Bette is such an emotional person and for her to be so cold to Angelica is surprising. I hope this is her defensive wall to keep herself together and that she will thaw very soon. Either that or Tina broke her spirit 6 years ago and will have to put it back together like a broken bowl. She may have taken Tina literally when she said Angelica was not her daughter and closed off all feeling for her in order to move on with her life. I can’t wait to read more.

    7. Although it was warm in my living room I’ve got the chivers by Bette’s cold approach of Tina and Angie. I can only hope it’s just an act to hide her true feelings to protect herself. Can’t wait to read the follow up. Thank you for this great story. I’ve read all of your stories and liked all of them but I must admit this one is by far your best. Chapeau!

    8. “Oh, right, you’re here as well. Hi, Tina” and turned back to our friends. And now I understood what Kit’s ‘she’s okay with you being here’ meant: you aren’t here as far as she’s concerned.

You’re killed me with that line! Oh, to be zeroed out by Bette Porter would make me freeze. You set the anxiety up well! I was hurt at the end. You got me a good way.

    9. Hey BOP,

This is heart breaking. I truly felt the emotions of Tina. I’m sure that Angelica will bridge the gap between B and Tee. Tee deserves to be treated that way but I’m sure B is excited to see her ex and ex-daughter?
