    Choices 6

With Bette occupying Karen’s time, Tina found herself wandering around the display and making smalltalk with a few of the other guests.

She’d run into Joyce Wishnia, never a totally comfortable meeting. Joyce and Phyllis were on the outs or something. Tina wasn’t exactly sure nor did she pursue the story. She just marveled at the vapidity of Joyce’s date and guessed that the young woman was supposed to be some signal to Phyllis.

While she hoped that Joyce wouldn’t tell the young woman that she worked in films, she knew her former counsel well enough to expect that bomb to get dropped early in the conversation.

The woman, of course, was an aspiring actress. Of course.

Based on what she’d seen thus far, Tina thought the woman’s best shot at fame would come from the films shot in San Fernando Valley.

But she played her part and did not mess with Joyce’s game. Joyce promised to send the woman’s information to Tina, who promised that she would give it all due consideration for any upcoming projects.

Social niceties observed, Tina knew that she could now slip away.

She also knew that Joyce owed her one. No doubt the lawyer had just talked this young woman into her bed for the evening.

One of the featured artworks was a large diorama set in a large Plexiglas box, set low to the ground. Tina was leaning forward, looking towards the center of the box, when she heard a familiar voice.

“Like what you see? Because you know I do.”

Standing opposite Tina was Karen, who was making absolutely no pretense of looking at artwork.

    “You’re terrible.”

    “I’m consistent,” Karen countered.

“That’s true.” Tina stood, minimizing some of Karen’s view. “Is this one of yours?”

    “It is indeed.”

Karen worked her way around the container to stand aside Tina. “It’s all from materials that I collected in a single day of garbage picking. The intent is to make a statement on how much crap people toss out on a daily basis.

“So recreating the outside of the Brady Bunch house with trash?”

“It’s pop culture. It’s nostalgia. It’s a statement. And, best of all, it’s the type of thing that sells well to baby boomers with cash.”

    1. I love that the shoe is on the other foot and Bette has to see Tina with someone else. However, I kind of feel for Bette because messing with her at work isn’t really fair. Hope it doesn’t end up biting Tina in the ass later.

    2. It was good how you described the tension growing between B&T. Karen’s cocky attitude with T is just fantastic! It certainly makes B starting to get jealous! Jodi’s comments were also hilarious. Great update. Hope you may continue with this story. It’s unfolding very nicely. PPS – Lucero & Marsha – From Mexico City

    6. I hope you continue this soon, so I can see a) just how far Karen gets and b) Bette unsuccessfully trying not to implode. I hope Tom and Jodi don’t make enough smirking comments to send La Porter over the edge… I have every faith they will though. Thanks for the post, pseud, and may the stressors abate.
