You better go after her, shell be over reacting right about now. Bette said, taking another sip of wine.
As if she had experienced this several times before and it was nothing more than a normality to her now, or an inconvenience.
Bette thanks for dinner and its a yes, Ill do it.
We shared a smile and she nodded towards the door for me to get a move on, so I grabbed my coat and hurried out after Millie.
As I rushed outside I stopped for a moment, adjusting my coat and scanning the darkness for Millie. I looked both ways but saw no one.
*****. I cursed, unsure of what to do next.
I pulled out my phone and turned off my caller ID so my number couldn’t be recognised. I knew it was along shot but I was not going to leave the situation like this, so I was prepared to try just about anything.
I began walking as I rang Millies mobile, as the empty rings filled my ears with doubt, I went to stand by the river side. Leaning on the cold metal of the barrier which separated myself from the murky depths of the Themes. A group of joggers passed and I clicked redial, my heart sinking with each minute that passed.
I clicked my phone shut, giving up. The sound of heels walking towards me made me look up. Bette stood there, looking stunning and regarding me with compassion and a slight hint of guilt.
Ill drop you off at her hotel if you want? she asked, holding a set of car keys up and shaking them slightly.
I smiled and nodded, joining her as we walked to her car.
Thank you Bette, even though youre probably not the best person to be getting into a car with right now.
No I guess not, but I wouldn’t leave you and when Millie storms out she does it damn fast. So its not very likely youll catch up with her now, where ever shes decided to drown her tears.
I shook my head, replaying the expression on Millie’s face in my mind.
